Cam Pan V3 firmware bug

I have all of my v3 cameras set to Automatic Updates Off. Anyone remember the v3 firmware ( 4.36.10.2864 November 2, 2022 ) that caused jittery Cloud video for months?

I wait until I see positive comments here on the Wyze Forum before updating my firmware.

My floodlight pro has no option to stop automatic firmware update. But it does ask if I want to update, and more importantly, I can opt to not be be asked anymore.

Well, it was a waste of time. I uninstalled and shutdown all my cameras and vacuum. Cleared all caches. Downgraded to 2.50.7.487.2. Flashed cam Pan V3 cameras to 4.50.5.1318 firmware.

The previous user was correct in that there is no option to disable auto updates, even in old app. By the time I flashed the firmware on the second camera, my first camera had already updated. Not sure why Wyze thought removing the users ability to control updates was a good idea.

I’ll wait it out a month or so before giving up on wyze and moving to something that more suits my off wifi recording needs.

That was my concern earlier, which was why I’d written this:

Also this:

I do wonder if something like Cam Outdoor v2 with Travel Mode would be a solution, but those models have their own firmware issues, and I’d be hesitant to buy an older Cam model at this point when something newer probably offers better features at a competitive price. I don’t think even Battery Cam Pro would be a good fit for this application; it’s considerably more expensive but doesn’t have the Travel Mode feature, though that’s been requested.

Yeah if you want an offline cam, that’s sort of a whole other ballgame, none of these wifi/cloud cam brands are going to work well for that, at least not without a lot of “rigging” stuff up.

If you want to stick with these cams, there are routers out there that can keep their time correct so you won’t have missing spots on the SD card, but they will still reboot every so often and will need to be able to authenticate etc too, so not really ideal.

Yeah it’s disappointing. Up until now, the cams have worked great for my needs. My only internet at home is my hotspot. I’m rural so the local landline DSL is crap and I don’t use enough data to justify spending a lot of money for dedicated internet. My phone internet is good enough and the offline continuous recording helped me keep at least an eye on my place when I leave and/or data to review if something happens.

Appreciate the help from everyone.

I’m going to keep this thread alive. My issue this morning may or may not be relevant.

Yesterday I was working on our bird feeder that is attached externally to our shed. I have an OG-T inside the shed monitoring the front door.

The ambient temp was 100°. The temp inside the shed reached 108°.

Needless to say I did not stay long in the shed and was doing something with the OG-T and probably plugged/unplugged it 4-6 times. Wasn’t thinking straight and forgot to eject/remove the SD card.

All seemed normal until this morning when I went to look at something on the OG-T SD card. Says nothing there. Timeline was missing. Ouch.

Went back a day and the timeline was there. Followed it forward until midnight - - timeline was missing.

Figured I corrupted the card and tried to format the card. It failed.

Yes I will pull the card, stick it in a PC, and see if it is reusable. This is the first time in 5 years I’ve had a card failure.

Not sure if this is related to the update. I will know more when I remove the card.

But this is where an interesting twist takes place. I received a notification from the Wyze app that that “the SD card in the Shed OG-T is not working properly”. See screenshot below.

I have never seen this notification referenced in this forum. My guess is it was recently added by Wyze to help resolve the SD issues.

I’m running on slow so it may be a few days before I check out the corrupted SD card.

Stay tuned.

Most likely the card just needs a format. Similar happened on one of my OGs when I was installing it and plugged/unplugged a couple times when I forgot the card was in it. Actually I don’t think I even had to pull it, I think a soft reboot in the app followed by an app format may have fixed it, but that was a while ago so maybe I did pull and format in a PC. Usually that sort of “unsafe eject” doesn’t permanently damage the card.

The only time I’ve ever seen that notification is when going into a specific cam in the app, never have I gotten an OS notification for it, so that’s a good development if it is being added. I actually have my spare OG out back right now for a temporary purpose, and the only spare SD card I had laying around is one with a known “bad spot” on it. I have gotten the notification in the app a couple of times (I’ve been formatting it every morning but have forgotten a couple of times, the bad spot is after about 1.5 days), but not yet at the OS level, so hopefully that is coming to android soon.

I seem to remember after the daylight savings change some of my cams had nothing after midnight that day, but then the next day were back to normal without me doing anything. Others saw that too. So maybe not even an SD card bug, just some weird timing thing?

I also noticed this weekend my v3 pan cam had stopped recording to the fairly new sdcard. I pulled the card, and no new recordings had been created for a month, since 4/30. And my OG hadn’t recorded to the sdcard since 5/23. I think the sdcard recording must glitch out during firmware updates. reformatting the cards on the PC now has them working again. Really frustrating to only notice this in instances I really wanted the footage.

I would like to know why this option was removed but also it was previously turned off, yet my panv3 has automatically updated without my permission this is happened twice so far in the last 6 or 8 months. Now the automatic update checkbox has been completely removed from all cameras in my app entirely. What I find interesting is that their support site tells you where to go to disable this yet there’s no options there to disable it unbelievable. And the other thing is is when I went to go check the version of my app the last day or so I get this nice little notification in the Play store that my app is no longer compatible for my device please contact developers to find out why.

It does seem odd, may have been a mistake, or maybe with all the security protocol changes they’ve been making (increased security is a good thing, generally speaking) they want to ensure people are protected. If the latter is true, I assume the other cams will lose the feature too. I don’t like it when companies go the Apple (and now MS and Google) route of forcing updates, hopefully this is a glitch and will get fixed. Other removed features like hardware decoding have reappeared so maybe this one will too.

On a good note, I’ve never had any issues with updates to the Panv3, though I also do not need them to operate without internet, which seems to be the issue here.

Are you running the 2.5 app? This is definitely being depreciated. If you have a 64 bit OS you can upgrade to the 3.x app (though some of us have stuck on 2.5, in my case I have one phone with each). As of now, everything is still working in the 2.5 app. But at some point that probably won’t be the case, due to all the updates with security protocols, etc.

If you’re unable to install the app on a device due to not supporting the 3.5 app, it can be “side loaded” from apkmirror.com. Just find the one (a couple versions back) that is a plain APK and doesn’t require their installer. When installing it, you may need to grant permission for “non store” apps. Once installed, just go into play store and update, and it will give you the latest/final 2.5 app (assuming you don’t have a 64 bit device, if you do, it will upgrade you to 3.x).

Not to highjack the thread, I can’t speak about Microsoft or Google, but Apple has never forced any updates on any of my devices I own. As a matter of fact two out of my three computers are still on 2022 and 2023 OS releases. My wife never updates her phone and iPad if I don’t do it for her.

I’m far from an apple expert but I know I’ve had friends complain about things being forced (maybe not automatically, but you can’t use things until you do, etc). There was also that thing where they reduced battery life somehow. I’m not calling apple out specifically, everyone is doing it now, but the trend definitely started in their corner, at least those were by far the first complaints I heard years ago.

Hope you’re enjoying that U2 album still

Just like everyone else all the updates are set by default to autoupdate. Some people are either lazy or ignorant to turn the auto updates off. No different than Wyze’s firmware/app auto update.

I think that was a rumour, I have never experienced it and I’ve been an iPhone user since iPhone 1. If it’s true I would guess must’ve been a buggy model that luckily I never owned. I think Apple is too big to play shady games especially when it comes to the iPhone market.

Not a U2 fan. I only like one of their songs, Vertigo.

There are still people that can’t manage to delete that album from their library. Apparently if you didn’t do it years ago when they rolled out a “fix” to allow it, you’re basically stuck with it forever.

Nah it did happen, but it was only people whose batteries had reached a certain state of depletion/age. Apple claimed it was for safety reasons. I believe one or two other brands got accused of doing the same thing at various points, don’t recall which ones (I think one of the Google Pixels was one of them, and probably a Samsung).
