A letter from the founders, what to expect in 2024

Feels like they should be paying you. I am sure they get money out of it. Most recycling places pay you to drop stuff off, such as for metal/appliances. I always get money to take them to recycling. Way better than taking them to the dump which often charges you to do so.

I take all my electronic waste to an e-recycle place, that is all they take is electronics. There are plenty of them around America.

Is that what this is about?

Yikes.

Kind of back to OT.

As a simple camera/light person, I would like to address a few issues.

  1. YAY! You got Web View back.
  2. Boo! you can’t control the size or layout of the video frames.
  3. Boo! I still have not found an in-house way to stream the data to my NAS on a loop and break it up into time segments (VLC can play a string of these videos in a row if you wanted to go through a full day instead of one hour at a time).
  4. YAY! The web viewer lets you select any combination of cameras to view.
  5. Boo! The phone app forces you to put things in a group, only ONE group per camera by having the camera linked to the group and not the group accessing the camera(s).
  6. Boo! I constantly get disconnects. No, it isn’t my network.
  7. Boo! Even though my service SAYS I get up to 5min at a time on the cloud, I have yet to see that, even with a room that has people in it moving around and talking.
  8. Boo! I can’t just continuously stream on an event timeline. I have to open each one individually.
  9. Boo! If I zoom into a video on the Android app during playback, I have to restart the video at the end and THEN zoom out (double tapping the screen only works during playback and not at the end of the vid).

So. I don’t exactly want to scrap my system, pay $1000+ to get a new system and take all the time replacing the cameras and lights, but little has been done to solve all these issues for years now and it is getting frustrating waiting for it.

Do I have to wait for the 2025 letter to hear about any of this?

It’s now going to be known as “the Year Wyze broke their own App”.

What a pill.

But you have many many devices so I guess I should cut you some slack.

Still, I am the spoonful of sugar. You are the medicine that won’t go down.

I’m out, but maybe I’ll be back.

Why? There’s been too much baiting, switching and now locking features behind a $99 per year subscription paywall that could increase at any point in time.

First you did the right thing with Cam Lite (sorta), then you did the wrong thing with making all future made cameras incompatible with it and then you did the scummy thing by locking really useful features like facial recognition and “ai” search behind this paywall.

But, Thank You. I do mean it, sincerely. Wyze imho was THE disruptor in this industry and if it wasn’t for you, we’d all probably be stuck with $100+ per camera + additional sub pricing with Ring, Google and whoever else is able to get away with it. I do think your camera and sub pricing is affordable and reasonable, mostly.

I think you’ve lost your way a wee bit with this paywall sub thing or maybe it’s necessary for/to your business model, who knows? How I see it, if someone only wants 1 or 2 cameras, they should not have to go without the features of someone willing to pay the $99 because they have a bunch of cameras. Either way, it’s now none of my business. If your current 2 million+ customers are ok with it, great, happy for you, and them. It’s not for me, not with competitors like Eufy building “AI” (ie: Facial, Person, Pet, Package, Vehicle detection) into a device (called a Homebase) which also can store a SSD/HDD (and thusly my data, at home) and doesn’t require a sub for anything, yet delivering most if not all and more than you do, with your sub. Sure, the cameras are slightly more expensive up front, but they are mostly 2K-4K and riddled with features (like crystal clear 2-way, tamper, alarm, spotlight, built in solar, etc)

No hard feelings though, really. Sure I now own like 20 Wyze cameras I can no longer find useful for anything (unless you let me trade them in - you won’t), that’s on me.

I still do like and recommend you to friends and family OK with a sub and not needing 4K kit.

If Eufy ever messes up royally, as I said, I’ll be back.

Very well said. Thank you for projecting a sentiment that I’m sure many share.

Just curious what all New did Wyze bring out this year other than camera’s?

To be clear, they said their goal was to become cash flow positive first and then they could start to explore unique products (which also doesn’t necessarily mean non-camera products), but that they could try unique things in general, even with cameras.:

They announced beginning cash flow positive at Q1 2024 ended. If we consider that their roadmap is usually planned out for 6-12 months in advance, that means they still likely had camera and AI related products/services in the works planned for at least 6-12 months after their quarterly report showed they were finally cashflow positive in April. So, 6-12 months after April means they already had most everything planned up through October 2024-April 2025 by the time they got that news.

So it’s possible we could see something new and unique ready by the end of this year now that they hit their cashflow positive goal, but they told us in an AMA that most of this year was planned to have a focus on cameras and AI and the app.

I do know they are working on a “chore robot,” though they said that would probably take 5 years.

Their yearly anniversary called wise week is coming up in October. They usually launch a bunch of new stuff at that time so keep an eye out then. But, don’t expect it to be a lot more than cameras, maybe app updates and the new service they’ve been talking about all year. They told us to expect 2024 to be similar to 2023 already, and 2023 was supposed to be mostly cameras.

The bird feeder is the closest thing to a product not requiring a camera that they’ve done in a long time, but it is technically a camera related accessory.

I’m hoping we’ll finally get some non-camera products again in 2025 now that they’re cashflow positive finally. I’m totally going to ask them about that in the next AMA. I already have 50+cameras. Is like to be able to expand with other smart home devices.
