I have been using a Wyze switch for a while now to control a Wyze Plug in the same room. The switch is operating in “Smart” mode, and until today it has worked great. But today, not only did the switch stop turning the plug on and off, no Wyze Plug (and I have several, of different generations) is even an option in the list of smart devices available for the switch to control. Other device types still show up in the list, and I have another Switch / Bulb pair in the house which continues to work fine. This seems to affect specifically Switch / Plug interactions. I have also tried making a new automation where when the switch turns on the plug should turn on which also doesn’t work, so I suspect there is some cloud issue going on but wanted to see if anyone else was having this specific issue.
I have already reset both devices and readded them to my account with no improvement.
I’m experiencing a similar issue with one of my Switches and also have no functional Additional Controls. The last time this happened, the only way I could recover was to delete my automations/rules for that Switch (prevents ghost rules), removed Switch from app, factory reset Switch, cut power to the circuit with Switch for 5 minutes, restore power to Switch, factory reset again, readd Switch via app, recreate rules and set Additional Controls. A real pain in the ^#@^#%#.
It seems like the issue has either gotten bigger or was bigger anyway and I didn’t notice at the time. I have 3 Switches, all operating in Smart mode and controlling different types of devices and only 2 are actually controlling anything. The Switch / Bulb pair I mentioned in the original post has now stopped working, and I also have a motion sensor which is supposed to turn on a Wyze Bulb via automations which is no longer working. This does make me think there is some larger issue with Automations overall, since most of mine have now stopped working across an array of different devices.
An update with some additional troubleshooting:
Automations set up through Google Home also don’t work on the non-functional devices. I looked through the rules history and the failing devices don’t show up at all, so it certainly seems like an issue on the Automations end of things, which considering multiple of my devices are failing but not all certainly doesn’t feel like it’s on my end. All of the devices are online and controllable directly through the app, it is specifically the automations that are failing to even register at this point.
I just want to add to this… something weird happened over the last couple of days where I had several v2.Motion and Contact sensors quit working right. I also had a Smart Plug that wasn’t working.
Each contact sensor/motion sensor/plug that was having issues, I had to delete them and re-add them. Then all the Automation that used them started working again. I did NOT have to delete an Automation or even fix an Automation that referenced those deleted/re-added devices. They went back just fine.
I did have to delete 1 Automation that seemed to quit working. The trigger was a v4 camera that turned on a smart plug. I deleted that Automation and re-made it. Then it started working?
Overall though, something weird happened that made v2.contact/v2.motion sensors/and an original Wyze Plug be invalidated but still show up like everything is fine.
So firstly, thank you for this. I believe your advice has cleared up 2/3s of my current issues and advanced the troubleshooting on the third. Fully removing and re-adding (rather than just resetting and re-adding without removing from the app) the switch in the Switch/Bulb pair and the motion sensor in the Sensor/Bulb pair got them working again.
No luck still on the Switch/Plug combo, even after fully removing and re-adding both the Switch and Plug. But I did some additional testing and I don’t believe the problem is the switch specifically, as it can control other devices that show up in the Smart mode “single press” devices list, like other bulbs in my house. I did realize that only “Single Press” actions (and probably double-press, button hold etc. actions but didn’t test those specifically) show up in the Automations History. If I set up a standard Automation (so not through the Switch settings page for Single-press actions) for controlling anything from the switch turning on / off, nothing ever happens and no entries show up in the automations trigger history. So my current suspicion is that Automations for the Switch are broken in some way (since this failure happens on all of my switches, including one that has not had any issues at all) and only actions specified in the Switch settings page for single-press actions actually work, combined with (I’m guessing) that at some point the list of devices that could be controlled through that page was reduced to only lights and I never noticed until now when I had an issue. I’m guessing this happened to ”simplify“ things for basic users since they would likely only be controlling lights anyway and move control of everything else (as is advertised on the project page, compatibility with the whole Wyze ecosystem) to Automations. Since I removed the Plug from the single press actions during my troubleshooting, and with Automations non-functional for Switches entirely it’s currently completely broken, which stinks because the combination of a Switch in Smart mode (which keeps the connected outlet permanently powered) and a Plug elsewhere in the room was very convenient for rooms with outlets I didn’t want to connect a lamp to.
My guess is my only current alternative to this would be to replace all the bulbs in the lamp with Wyze bulbs, which, no thanks, it’s a 5 bulb lamp and these Automations are supposed to work as far as I can tell.
So after typing out my last comment and reading this thread ( Wyze Switch - Smart Control - no bulbs - #8 by Seapup ) I believe I have figured it out. Firstly, it looks to me that normal Automations simply do not work for Switches, despite being able to set up one with no indication it won’t work. The Switch seems to ONLY be able to control devices set up through its actual settings page, either through the Single Press or Additional Controls options. The “Single Press” page now only shows Wyze light products (like Bulbs or Light Strips) where this was not always the case since I originally obviously had a Wyze Plug set for a Single Press controlled device. In the Additional Controls you CAN set up control for any other Wyze device (similar to normal Automations), but only for double / triple press or press-and-hold actions on the Switch. I confirmed this by setting up double press to turn on the Plug and press-and-hold to turn it off, which works as expected. This technically works but… is annoying since it needs two different actions to toggle a thing that should just be able to (and was until I removed it) be toggled.
I guess I can live with it, but it’s frustrating for sure. I wish the plug (which really is a device that is only toggled, like a bulb and unlike a robot vacuum) still showed up in the list of Single Press devices, OR normal Automations worked for the Switch, which would be able to accomplish the same thing.
Make an Automation that turns the plug on when the light above turns on. I also use the the Long press to turn off the bulb and other things… including using a plug as a “Profile” plug… that means an automation that does different things based on the on/off status of the plug. For Example, if plug turned off, turn off all the lights in the house, lock the door and turn on notifications for contact sensors and cameras. If plugs turns on, soften the notifications of the house because people are moving around. Something like that.
I always like hearing what people do with the automation. Caution though… a bug. The Switch’s additional controls will stop working sometimes. The only fix is to blank them out (delete all rules ou set in the controls)… back out to the home screen, pull down to refresh the app to the servers.. then delete the cache of the app… force close and then open app and re-setup the Switch automations.
And then NEVER touch them again.
There is a bug where the switches can’t really be edited. You have to set them and them leave them alone. I’ve gone around and around with these things since they released them. I wish they would release a V2 of it. We use 3 of them in my house a lot and really like them. Great devices when they work.
Room 4 - Switch controls Plug connect to normal lamp. (Seemingly permanently broken)
Short of adding a second lamp to the room with a smart bulb in it (no thanks) or replacing all the bulbs in the current normal lamp (to the tune of about $60 ) I’m not sure how I could set up an automation chain that would work for my current setup. Even if they had filtered the “single-press” available devices in the Switch settings page, if normal Automations actually worked it would be a non-issue since I could just set “If switch turns on, turn on plug” and vice-versa. I would never have guessed before now that, despite being able to set them up without complaint and there even being a link to the Automations app page in the Switch settings page, Automations actually simply don’t function at all for the Wyze Switch.
I’m not sure how I will proceed at this point (other than opening a Wishlist post for this function to come back), but as it is my use case for this Switch and Plug is effectively broken entirely.
I figured out a solution to my issue with my Switches, but won’t elaborate here because it’s completely unrelated and I’d rather not pollute your excellent topic.
I wanted to make sure that the issue wasn’t with specific devices, but even though I can set this kind of behavior through the controlled Smart Devices in the Switch settings page and have it work, if I set up the action as an Automation it doesn’t work. I’ve done a little additional testing as well, with other Switch / device combos in my house, including with a Switch that I haven’t had any issues with at all (although all it does is control a group of smart bulbs) also with no luck. I simply can’t get any Automation to trigger through any Wyze Switch, and as far as I can tell the Automation isn’t even trying to fire, as it never shows up in the Automation History list. Even failed Automations (like ones including offline devices) show up in there when they activate. The only devices I can actually get to work is is ones I can assign through the One-Press Smart Control settings or the Additional Controls in the Switch settings page, which is either a filtered list of only light-related products or through double- and triple-taps, which isn’t exactly convenient.
A little extra troubleshooting, I’ve discovered that while Wyze Automations still don’t work with any of my Switches, if I connect my Wyze account to IFTTT I CAN get the “switch turns on, plug turns on” functionality I want (and expected out of the normal Automations). It certainly isn’t ideal, as it introduces yet another cloud service to the chain of actions needed to control two devices in the same room, and there is noticeably more lag when using IFTTT, but I suppose it is a stopgap measure while my support ticket continues to be processed. It still strikes me as pretty odd that neither Wyze or Google Home automations are able to do this, but IFTTT is for some reason. Maybe this alternative will help out some of the other use cases I have seen in this thread.
My wyze switch was setup in “smart control” mode to control a wyze smart plug for the past few years. This broke recently in the last few weeks. I fixed issue by going into automations and creating 2 automations. One automation to turn on smart plug when i turn on switch and a second to turn off smart plug when I turn off switch. Good luck!
This was what I expected to be able to do when I could no longer control the plug directly, but for some reason setting up Automations like that don’t work for me. If you don’t mind sharing, are you using Android or iOS for the app? Based on some of the responses I have gotten, where some people have no issues setting up Automations and some have my same issue with it, I am starting to wonder if it is maybe an app bug where the Automations look like they are getting set up when they actually aren’t.
I continue to wait on my support ticket, I pinged them again today as it has been 7 days since the last I heard from them.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), my issue isn’t with the “Additional Controls” which have worked the whole time, it is with the single-press controls as well as any Automation involving the switches (as in I don’t seem to be able to set up an Automation where “Switch turns on → literally any other action” actually works. I currently have Additional controls turning the plug on with a double-press and turning the plug off with a press-and-hold, which technically works but is not exactly convenient.
I did try your instructions anyway with no improvement. Per my support ticket I am not the only person reporting this exact issue recently, so at this point I don’t believe it is an isolated issue, but I will have to wait and see what they dig up from my logs.
Well unfortunately I got my reply from my support ticket and the response was that they are “currently unable to resolve your issue at this time”, which is disappointing.
I guess I will resign myself to using IFTTT to get this one switch working in the way that I want, which is something I suppose. Thanks to everyone who commented in this thread with their suggestions and commiseration.
