Wyze Robot Vacuum beta firmware - 10/29/2024

So my vacuum that was orphaned on an old beta firmware decided to offer the latest firmware version today? Waiting for it to finish to see what happens…

Brick or no brick?

Wow! I confirm I am seeing a firmware update offered for this too!!!

Was your update successful?

I’m away from home and can’t update mine right now.

It was always my understanding that Wyze tested the March 2022 firmware and found that orphaned beta firmware branches were usually successful doing that update, but that a small percentage of them would brick on the update. So chances are updating to this will be successful, but it’s possible a small percentage of them will brick, and so they were hesitant to approve it because it would cause a lot of them to be sent in to be manually flashed back to working condition.

I wonder if they are finally ready to do that or will just resell the bricked ones as “Refurbished” after they re-flash them.

Well I can tell you this… It’s offered and tried every single time I’ve opened up settings or the app for this vacuum. It’s not been successful yet. Still thinks it’s online. Yet when it’s not successful I can’t get the vacuum to leave the dock and start to clean. So, not looking good so far.

My update failed the first attempt, but completed the second.

Was yours on the beta firmware for the last couple years? .130?

I was on 1.6.173 from way back.

Ok. Yeah I have been stuck like many others on .130 since way back. So far doesn’t look good for us.

Ok so here’s where we are at. The update fails Everytime. Unit won’t vacuum or move under any command but it’s still online. If I disconnect from charging station it shows white and knows it’s not charging. But won’t return to base or complete update. So definitely stuck in a weird mode but technically not bricked. Not sure if wyze has someone to look at it in this state or not.

If you end up contacting support about this, please keep me updated with what they say, etc.

I’m trying to do a little poking around about this, but can’t make any guarantees where that may lead our if I’ll ever have anything to share. But I’m going to watch this thread for the foreseeable future and see what others report related to this.

Good news to report.

I am not home so I called the wife. Had her remove from dock and hold the power for 5 seconds. Count to 15. Press power to turn on. Connect to dock. While booting she heard “update successful”

Mine is now on .213

That’s so cool! I might do mine soon too.

Yep it’s out in a test run. I suspect the “bricked” ones really just need a correct reboot. Not factory reset etc in the middle of a firmware update.

Maybe some of them, but Wyze engineers indicated that a lot of the ones they tested would only revive with a firmware flash, so I am sure they definitely have some that really brick, though that was on an older firmware. Maybe the updates in the last few years resolved that issue for a lot more of them. :man_shrugging: At least you proved it is working and that a restart can be a good thing to try. :+1:

Well I wonder how many just got into this stupid state… And then what happened after that to troubleshoot.

I mean mine did go completely stupid there for a little.

I asked a month or two back how they were going to fix ours because I knew that the certificates were going to expire soon. I’m guessing somebody decided it was better to roll the dice and upgrade them while they could still talk.

Did you do yours yet ? Mine is fine now and had a couple runs

Not yet. I was waiting to see if Wyze would let me know anything about the situation. If it was an accident, and they stop allowing anybody to get the update, I might actually stay on the beta firmware just so that I can help test and confirm things for the people that get stuck there. As a volunteer, sometimes I will stay on annoying or bad firmware or situations just so I can help troubleshoot things for people who are having problems. While the production line of things usually have enough other people to help and support and confirm things. So if they’re going to block other people from being able to get the new firmware, I might want to stay on the old one in case I need to continue to help the people who still get stuck on that old firmware.

That’s the main reason I’ve held off for now. I haven’t heard from Wyze if they were intentionally going to allow everybody to switch to the production firmware now or if they’re going to cut people off again. If it seems like they’re going to leave it for everybody to update now then I will probably update so that I am on the same firmware as everybody else.

I was seeing the update for my Vacuum which would have gotten me to .213. However, I just looked and it is no longer available. So maybe they pulled it back for some FW versions as there was the issue with the update could Brick the Vacuum

Well I escaped lol

So did we ever hear of any bricks from this latest slip up?
