Wyze Lock Bolt v2

I am not sure if I’m leaving this in the right area. I installed the Wise Lock Bolt version 2 today and I had a little trouble with it but the problem that’s persisting is that the bolt locks even when the door is open. I set the time for 15 seconds for after I close the door that it would lock and that’s fine because the door is closed But if I come in the door and I leave the door open the bolt still protrudes out after 15 seconds even though the door is. I previously had the original Wise lock for my door and that worked perfect as far as when the Bolt would come out. I have it timed for 15 seconds And it locks if the door is open or closed. I hope they get it fixed for this soon because it’s aggravating for when I want to close the front door the bolt is out.

If the bolt latch is extending when the door isn’t closed, then I’d do three things:

  1. Make sure the app is current.
  2. Make sure the device’s firmware is current.
  3. Recalibrate the lock in Settings.

My experience with the Auto-Lock setting (which I think is what you’re using) on Palm Lock is that it generally works as expected but occasionally gets confused and tries to extend the bolt latch when the door isn’t completely closed. I realize that Lock Bolt v2 is a different device, but I’d expect recalibrating to help, so I’d try that if you haven’t already.

I do not yet have the Lock Bolt v2. But I do have both the Wyze Lock and the Bolt Lock v1. With the original Wyze Lock, the calibration process gives the lock the ability to “know” if the door open, closed or ajar. With the Wyze Bolt v1 and v2, the calibration process only confirms if the door opens to the right or the left.

I checked the FAQ for the v2 and this is what it states:

How does Auto-Lock work?

Wyze Lock Bolt v2 includes an auto-lock timer. After you set a timer and unlock the door, the lock begins counting down. When the countdown reaches zero, the bolt extends and the door locks automatically. The lock does not detect whether the door is closed, so please ensure the door is fully shut before the time is up.

I hope I understood your concern properly.

Oh, yeah, good call. It looks like it’s time-based only and doesn’t sense whether the door is closed. On Palm Lock, the Auto-Lock feature has an Immediately option that I use (there’s also an available After a Delay option available), so I figured Lock Bolt v2 would have a similar feature since it was introduced afterward. Maybe that was something they didn’t add since (according to the unboxing video) one goal with this was to make it available at the same price as the previous model.

That’s annoying that it can deploy the bolt latch even when the door is open.

The way the auto-lock on the V1 and V2 seem to be the same, 15 seconds is the minimum time before the bolt is extended. I have my V1 set to 5 minutes. Because I rarely us my front door, it is perfect for a that type of lock. The 5 minutes usually gives me plenty of time to deal with whoever came to that door. The only reason I am thinking of switching to a v2 is the new “keyed” feature. Otherwise, the V1 fills my need perfectly.

I have the Wyze Lock on the door going into my garage. I do not a door going outside from the garage. Again, the original Lock is perfect for my needs. I used to love the auto-unlock feature of this lock, but it proved to be unreliable. So I use a location trigger rule to unlock the door when I get within 500 feet of my home. If I am just driving past the house and the door unlocks, it will auto-lock after 5 minutes. The big garage door is always closed, so that does not leave my house open to the world.

@Crease can you run a test for me? Because the Palm Lock is wi-fi connected, could you create a location based trigger rule to unlock the lock? I am curious to see if it works the same way as the Wyze Lock.

I don’t have the original Wyze Lock for comparison, but I’ve tested Location Trigger Automations with Palm Lock previously: One locks the lock when I leave 500 ft from my home address, and the other unlocks when I arrive within 500 ft. Those worked as expected, but I currently have them disabled, because it’s not a feature I really use. Was there something specific you wanted me to try?

Regarding @h.waldman’s issue, I think the solution is probably going to be getting used to the way Auto-Lock works and remembering to check the bolt latch before attempting to close the door, setting a longer delay, or both. I don’t know if the device itself has the same kind of gyroscope as Palm Lock that could be enabled or tweaked with a firmware update and recalibration. :man_shrugging:

Nope. That is exactly the information I was looking for. I wouldn’t use a rule like on that on a door that leads directly outside. But, I am using the same un-lock rule for the inside garage door. I wanted to make sure I would have the same ability with the V2.

Thanks!

Yeah, that’s another reason I have it disabled, because that Palm Lock is on the front door.

Oh, did you want me to try testing that with Lock Bolt v2? I haven’t tried that.

That would be great. Thanks.

Sure thing. If I don’t get to it within the next day or so, then feel free to ping me here or in a Personal Message to remind me.

@mvb, I checked a geolocation trigger with Lock Bolt v2 (essentially the same thing I did before with Palm Lock), and it worked as expected. :+1:

Incidentally—and tangentially relevant to @h.waldman’s original issue—Palm Lock’s Lock After Hours feature doesn’t seem to care if the door is still open at its appointed activation time and will deploy the bolt latch regardless. I realize that’s a different lock product, but I mention it because I do have experience with these locks “locking” when a door is open, and it’s annoying and has the potential to mar a jamb if someone tries to close the door while the bolt is unexpectedly extended.

Thanks for the update. I am still debating whether to update the Wyze Luck on my inside garage door. I really like how reliable that lock has been for me. I’m just not sure if I should update for updates sake. And I usually get 6 or 7 months from a set of batteries.

You’re welcome. I don’t know what to expect for the Lock Bolt v2 batteries. It takes 8 AAs, and I currently have it on the door between the garage and house. I know some people aren’t a fan of the physical key option with these newest lock releases, but I like knowing that I can still unlock something in the event of a total power failure.
