The original Wyze Doorbell had users install the Chime Bypass.
When upgrading to the Wyze Doorbell V2 can I leave the Chime Bypass circuit in place since I only need the wiring for the AC power? The v2 will be using the Wyze Cam OG & V3 for the doorbell chime.
The same ask for the DuoCam if I leave the original Wyze wiring that bypasses the mechanical chime, will it still power the DuoCam as it does the original Wyze Doorbell?
I think you can, because that would complete the circuit to provide power to the doorbell. Then in the app you would set the Video Doorbell v2’s Settings ➜ Chime ➜ Doorbell Chime Type to None and Cameras as Chime to your selected Wyze Cams. Video Doorbell v2’s ability to ring my home’s built-in mechanical chime is one of the main reasons I bought that when it was released (the other is the local microSD recording), and the Chime Controller is included in the package (so I have that installed and set Doorbell Chime Type to Mechanical), so if you choose to use your chime (i.e., remove the bypass) at some point, that should be a pretty straightforward task.
That should also be a “yes”, as Duo Cam Doorbell includes a jump wire in its packaging, and the “Wired Installation” section of the Help Center article for installing Duo Cam Doorbell refers to this use of the jump wire and actually embeds the installation video for the original Video Doorbell. My understanding is that the Duo Cam Doorbell available from the Wyze Store includes Wi-Fi Chime but that some resellers (Home Depot and sellers on eBay) are also selling Duo Cam Doorbell without the chime, so that gives you other options (in addition to the cameras you plan to use as accessory chimes). Duo Cam Doorbell can also ring a home’s built-in chime (if that chime isn’t bypassed), but the Chime Controller (sold separately) is recommended for best results.
Copy that, thanks for the detailed response exactly! Ended up ordering the $40 Duo Cam, the value add will be the 24x7 SD card. One big con though is they require the battery to be installed even though I’ll be running it wired. Hopefully their batteries can stay charging 24x7/365 or we all may have spicy pillows in 5/10yrs+. Gonna set bi annual google calendars to check doorbell battery life now
That seems like a pretty good deal on the Duo Cam Doorbell. I guess that’s without the Wi-Fi Chime? I still like my Video Doorbell v2, even though I think the microSD card slot placement could be better. (The mount that I fabricated helps to compensate for that, though.) You’re right about how the battery has to be installed even when the doorbell is used in a wired configuration, and my understanding is that this uses the same batteries as Battery Cam Pro, so replacements should be available if necessary. The calendar reminder is a good idea, I think.
Also, since Duo Cam Doorbell has the battery, I’d expect it to function (at least as far as recording events is concerned) even during a power outage. I’ve learned by playing with Video Doorbell v2 that it will remain connected to Wi-Fi and transmit video for a short time even after being removed from power while it exhausts whatever is stored in its capacitor, but a battery seems like a better solution for that problem.
