I wish Wyze would allow turning off automatic firmware updates on all their products. I can understand that these updates are needed to fix bugs and security vulnerabilities but breaking the operation of devices due to firmware incompatibility with older phones/tablets is not an acceptable solution. The user should have this control at his disposition and accept the risks if he wishes to keep using the equipment with older firmware, especially users that don’t use offline/cloud storage or monitoring services and may not need all the features incorporated into more recent updates. Presenting a warning of the risks next to a “disable auto updates” button would be enough for the purpose.
Which products? All my cams allow turning it off (and that’s how I have them all set).
You can disable automatic app updates in your phone’s OS settings too.
Where is that control for the Wyze Cam OG? How about the Wyze Cam Pan? How about the Wyze Plug CFH? I don’t see that control under Device Info as for other cameras such as the v3.
I have Panv3s, OGs, an OG Telephoto, and a v4. They are all in the same place. Cam live view → gear icon → device info → firmware version. At the top is “automatic update”. I don’t have any of their smart plugs so can’t comment on those.
Are you running an old app version? I seem to remember the OGs didn’t have it until the UI update earlier this year, but may be remembering wrong.
Yes, following the path you describe is how I do it on my v3 camera but the option to disable auto updates is not available for the other cameras or plug I mentioned. I’m running 2.50 app version (old) because the newer app versions are not compatible with older 32 bit OS android phones. Thanks for the reply though.
I have Wyze App version 2.50 running on an old Fire Tablet. I rarely use it for Wyze because of Wyze security upgrades make App 2.50 very limited in functionality. For me only Cloud Event videos can be viewed on App 2.50.
If you need a newer budget tablet, I would look at a Samsung Tab A11 for $124. It will get Android updates through 2032.
My wife has the new Wyze app installed on her iPhone and I don’t see the option to turn off auto firmware updates for the devices I mentioned on it either.
I only use Wyze v3 cameras so I will let others chime in if they can.
Yeah the 2.5 app is very old and very different. You can’t get upset with Wyze because you’re running an app that was replaced 2 years ago and is no longer supported. By staying on firmware old enough to work with that app, you’re sacrificing a lot of major security updates.
There will be lots of tablet deals coming up for black friday. The A series are great for the money and Lenovo has some really good values too. I’ve never tried the Onn tablets but they can be gotten at really good prices too. As long as they’re 64 bit with a reasonable amount of RAM, they can run basic stuff. I’ve always tossed around the idea of keeping one next to my couch but never pulled the trigger (I have a laptop sitting there always anyway).
Probably because your cams are running really old firmware so not really compatible with the new app either.
When I shop for devices, I look at price and the number of years it should receive updates. I figure balancing both will give me the best Bang For The Buck.
For me that isn’t all that critical, I’ve found that often those devices can’t run a 5-10 year newer OS well, they’re just underpowered at that point. It’s a nice to have but not a deciding factor for me. My phone has been stuck on Android 14 for a few years, going to be keeping an eye out on deals to replace it. My last Samsung phone became practically unusable with its final android version, so the 2 extra years of updates it got ended up biting me in the ass.
I understand your points and it is possible we use our devices differently. I just traded in a Pixel 6 Pro. Got 5 years of use and it was fine in its last year of updates on Android 17. I put very few Apps on my phone.
When I said above I look at price and years of updates, price is Not always the lowest for me. I just bought a Pixel 11 Pro XL. The 512 version comes with 16GB of RAM instead of 12GB. For me I expect it will be fine getting Android updates through 2033.
Yup, not saying either way is wrong, just for me personally it isn’t a big selling point either way. I’m still on a Pixel 4a (5G) and will probably go to the standard 256GB Pixel 11 once the prices drop some.
I can’t get upset with Wyze because they can’t keep backward compatibility for their products and because I should accept that I need to replace my phone/tablet and possibly every camera and other Wyze device every 2 years or whenever they break the operation with new firmware that comes out at the rate of once every few days? Is that the answer? Do you work for Wyze marketing? My suggestion and complaint is for the engineering department.
There is no engineering department here, just fellow users. 32 bit devices have been obsolete for a lot more than 2 years. My 64 bit phone is almost 5 years old at this point.
Google forced developers to move to 64 bit, nobody had any choice. Sure you can load the old apps but obviously as time goes on, they will have more and more problems. A friend of mine has Sonos devices, when they redid their app to 64 bit, they did not include older devices, and the old app no longer works on even 32 bit devices, so they’re left with nearly a thousand dollars of paperweights. At least you have some options.
No need to replace any cameras or anything else, you just need a supported device to run the app on.
I agree ,sometimes these "firmware updates " create problems or undesirable outcomes.
Well ,I can select it on all my version cam
