This past summer Greater Toronto Area police made all those activities illegal. Drivers who are involved in stunt driving and street racing are subject to:
An immediate 30-day driver’s license suspension;
An immediate 14-day vehicle impoundment at roadside (whether it is your vehicle or not);
A minimum fine of $2,000 and a maximum of $10,000;
I don’t have any anywhere. I’ve thought the backyard would be a good place for one, especially when the dog goes out at night, but I figured I’d have to have a junction box installed, and then Wyze released the Plug-In Mount, so now it’s something I might have to give more consideration.
It might be interesting to see what kind of data comes out of those policing changes. I often get the impression that laws or ordinances are passed to make people feel better about a situation but without any new enforcement measures or “teeth”—though it seems like these are some serious penalties, which I think is good. Hopefully it’s a meaningful contribution to solving an actual problem.
I hope I didn’t lead you astray by suggesting the deal, but at least it got you acquainted with , so that seems like a win to me.
I forgot to mention, some of those penalties apply to spectators as well. Past summer some people got arrested at an empty parking lot where those activities were taking place.
That reminds me of what Chad Daniels might refer to as “old man knowledge”.[1]
This reference is available on YouTube by searching for “Chad Daniels The Backyard”. Although some may interpret it as not being “family friendly”, I recommend the entire Dad Chaniels special (I’ve watched it several times) and appreciate his perspective on parenting. ↩︎
I grew up very rural and worked at a drag strip in my teens. If it had tires, we could do burnouts in it. But have seen more than a few pop (and more than a few cases of people doing stupid crap).
Of course my car now, the tires for it are obscenely expensive, so no gratuitous stupidity. And/or I’m too old for that crap. Although the last time they had to be replaced, I happily took off what little was left before taking them in to the tire shop.
They scolded me for waiting way too long to replace them. I was like, don’t worry, there was 1/8" left about 2 hours ago. “oooooh gotcha”.
I may have found a home for it. A few days ago, I needed to leave the truck windows open to air it out, so I did that and backed it to the end of the driveway (so it would be in the sun and away from the house’s shadow). I wanted extra coverage on it, so I moved the Cam OG Telephoto to a window where it could provide a good view zoomed in on the truck. I already have a Cam v4 in that window, but I positioned the Cam OG Telephoto to provide the view I want.
I didn’t remove the camera after I was done with that task, and after looking through thumbnails of events that it has captured, I decided I really like that view, so it’s staying there for now.
Then this discussion in another topic happened, and I learned about an Automations Action that I’d never used before, thanks to @carverofchoice, so now I have two new Automations set up: One has the Cam OG Telephoto upload a short video if the Cam v4 detects motion, and the other has the Cam v4 upload a short video if the Cam OG Telephoto detects motion. I’ll play with that for a few days and see if that gives me more reliable data about the little USPS delivery truck on its way to the CBU.
