I don’t know if anyone here is/was a fan of Northern Exposure, but I enjoyed the eclectic music selections that show used and a while back found KBHR online as a fan project Internet “radio” stream. That’s what I’m listening to at the moment.

Thanks!

I definitely watched. Do you have a favorite episode or clip?

Oh, man, so many! I think Adam is one of the best characters I’ve ever seen on television, and the way that character is played in an episode like “The Big Feast” still makes me laugh. Occasionally I pick up a bottle of Clan MacGregor both because I’m cheap (and like Scotch) and because Eve mentioned it during that episode.

I also like “Heroes” because of the way “A Whiter Shade of Pale”, by Procol Harum, was used in that one in the original airing. That song and others in various episodes were replaced with different music for the DVD releases (which I have) because of licensing/rights issues, but my understanding is that the music as the show originally aired has been restored for the series that streams on Prime Video, and I watched that part of that episode just to see/hear it for myself after a dude at the liberry told me about it.

I like “The Three Amigos”, too, because of the music and the way Chris reads The Call of the Wild through that one.

My first exposure () to that show was during a college class where the instructor passed out sheets with references to various cultural and historic events or figures and wanted us to write down a few notes or thoughts about our understandings of the items on the list. Then he played “Dateline: Cicely” (another Adam episode) for us. That got me hooked.

What about you?

Back on the music, I really dig how this streaming station sometimes plays audio clips of scenes from the show between songs. It contributes to the atmosphere of the listening experience.

No favorites, just a general memory of the characters and tone and rustic outdoor setting. Been at least twenty-five years since I’ve watched an episode, time to check out your favs.

A friend fan of Chris Whitley introduced me to his music in the early aughts and in retrospect I discovered that some of his stuff was on the show.

“Whitley used various alternate tunings and, among other musical instruments, often played slide guitar on a National Triolian resonator guitar nicknamed ‘Mustard.’” -wiki

I’m not familiar with the name, but I guess I’ve probably heard the music by watching the show. Maybe I’ll dig into that at some point.

Mention of this makes me think of the first line of Paul Simon’s “Graceland” (“The Mississippi Delta was shining like a National guitar”), which I haven’t listened to in years, and the album cover for Dire Straits’s Brothers in Arms (still a favorite album).

Another one I always liked was “Grosse Pointe, 48230”.

As a kid I found listening to ‘night music’ in bed fun and mysterious. In the early to mid-60s I think this show was unique or nearly so.

It couples with the grand old church that never closed, open to troubled hearts and minds whenever doubt might strike.

That’s really cool. I dig the deep radio voice and can imagine how that’s comforting, like a snug blanket. I like how you can hear that it was recorded from an LP, too.

I didn’t know what that song was called, but it’s making me think that I’ve heard that same tune associated with another television or radio program, maybe. I just read that it’s a standard, so maybe my memory is conflating it with something else, but I feel () like something in my brain wants to associate it with the sign-off of a different show.

Thank you for sharing memories like this. :+1:

The night music I heard in the 1950’s and 60’s was whatever was playing on the Jukebox right below my bedroom in my father’s Tavern.
The good part was I always got free 45’s when the jukebox man would change out the records every two weeks or so.

I don’t know how to share these things ‘responsibly’ (maybe just sharing them dumbly is responsible) but here are a couple since the @crease opened the cosmic portal.

They exist in this form saved in a Media Player Classic freeware ‘Favorites’ tab.

KUTX. Eclectic and Texas-y.

KKJZ. Bebop only DJ free.

I’ve heard ‘point your smart speaker to/at’ but that’s beyond my interest and ken.

Nice! If I’d’a shared it it would have been in Flash.

(I didn’t know about it. But if I did, it would have been in an extinct tech. Because I’m old. Not future forward. Clinging to the past. Desperately.)

The first time I watched the video I thought he was a bit odd. Then I realized he is really getting into the music. Put him and Yuja Wang playing Rhapsody In Blue on dual pianos like the original.

For those unfamiliar with Yuja Wang she is a prodigy. Here she is at 9 years old

Do you still have your 45’s and if so did the Jukebox man have any “Promotional Copy Not For Sale” stamped records? Promo copies of vinyl records can be sought after by collectors.

I don’t think there were any promo records involved. He just came with the new records and took the old ones out. I don’t have anymore off those old 45’s.

I sold all of my vinyl about 10 years ago. All of my music is on CDs and MP3/WAV files. I will hang on to all of my digital sourced music until some better format comes along. If that happens, I guess I will have to buy the White Album again.

Seems like part of his public performance, although maybe related to a meditated movement discipline?

lang lang might say: I do it because I like it. It feels good.

Helps him get into it, as you say.

I like the prodigy’s rendition.

There are many bird threads on the Wyze forum, so I was torn on where to post this. Water Cooler Music Section here you go.
