Using Cat5 cable for power with USB RJ45 adapters

Has anyone tried using Cat5 cable for power using USB RJ45 adaptors? I am trying and does not work that good. It freezes up when I use the pan movement. I am using the power block that comes with the cameras.

Welcome to the Forum, @robocop634!

I don’t recall ever reading of anyone substituting the stock USB cable for that, but I believe @spamoni has used other adapters in a PoE setup. I think in that instance he’s using a PoE switch to inject power into his Ethernet cables and then the adapters down-regulate the voltage where the cameras are connected. You can search something like @spamoni PoE USB adapter to read more about that.

In your case—particularly with the use of Cam Pan v3 (because that needs the L-shaped Micro-B male connector at the terminus)—I suspect that you’re doing something like this:

:electric_plug: stock Wyze power adapter ➜ USB-A-male-to-RJ45-female adapter ➜ Ethernet patch cable ➜ RJ45-female-to-USB-A-female adapter ➜ stock Wyze Cam Pan v3 power cable ➜ Cam Pan v3 :cam_pan_v3:

In a case like that, you’re essentially introducing some adapters and length to your cable (by using Ethernet cable as an extension), and I wonder if you’re seeing a significant voltage/current drop because of it. Is that what you’re doing and what you think might be happening?

Welcome @robocop634

As @Crease has mentioned, I am running my outdoor cameras via a PoE setup. Obviously, I only use it for power. I opted to use a PoE Switch which outputs more power than a standard brick. It has worked flawlessly for year. I even have 2 cameras running off of one feed / Ethernet cable.
