I am curious how much it is estimated that a typical user uses in computer processing/cloud space/time when having a detection. I totally understand that this processing multiplied out by the entire userbase could really add up to a lot of money and that not being able to foresee these costs over time with a new product can be forgiven.
So lets say I have 20 valid detections a month. How much did I cost WYZE to enjoy this service?
I know that in the future you will recoup these costs with the new customers and there has to be a cost/benefit analysis done on this to see what it does cost the company and then figure out what a customer would be willing to pay for such a service. Its like the unlimited capture feature that I now enjoy and am perfectly willing to pay for per camera at the LOW price it is being offered! I would expect this new service to be priced accordingly, knowing my friends here at WYZE and how they seem to operate.
I will be perfectly happy to donate to the cause when this happens, because I do value this specialized feature and it will allow me to use WYZE instead of a more expensive system for my security. I am definitely getting my value and then some from the WYZE product line and from me, you have no complaints about the inability to keep a hasty promise made before all the facts were known. How astronomical are these costs per camera/detection? Would $5 a month cover it or are we talking much less? I like being considered part of the family… count me in at some level.
@UserCustomerGwen please let’s digest this new first and give our initial thoughts then you can respond. I don’t how I feel about the whole thing
I would love to know this @UserCustomerGwen and @WyzeTeam when you provide more information in the future I would like to have some stats on this. How much money does it cost Wyze per Person Detection or per 10 or 20 or 50. Some number so users can see what we’re dealing with. Also how much money does Wyze need to make up for this? If 50,000 people gave $5/month would it be enough? Please give us some math information later this year.
Thank you!
Another question I have: if users instead of just giving Wyze free money started paying for CamPlus would that cover some costs? If 50,000 users payed for 3 cameras for CamPlus each month would it be enough? It would be over $220,000/month. I would really like some stats for this.
Thanks
Or give us the binaries, and let us run the detection locally on a Raspberry Pi.
Okay. That’s nice. Motion detection does not work. Person detection does not work. Why pay for any of these features, when, auto-switch to IR generates a motion detected video, and every time the Cam Pan moves, it generates a motion detected video, no matter what the sensitivity setting is?
There are many other options to this including but not limited to:
- Person Detection on firmware. (Still don’t know why we don’t have it would like explanation from Wyze)
- P/C app to use RSTP
- Recreate MaxDrive and use local storage and local AI
Hopefully Wyze will go for another way to have Person Detection for free!
It’s sad to hear that Wyze Cams will become just another subscription service. To me, aside from affordable hardware, the biggest Wyze advantage is no monthly fees.
I would much rather pay a little more up front than pay a monthly fee.
I might not mind a small subscription fee if Person Detection was reliable but currently it is not. My garage camera that is pointed down my driveway constantly sends me Person Detected notifications every time a car drives past my house even though the street is well outside the detection zone. The street is 125’ from the camera and my detection zone is set to only detect up to 50’ from the camera. Yet I can walk up my driveway all the way to the garage 10 time a day and not get a single person notification. It has to get a lot more reliable before I would even consider paying for it.
I even tried the Web Cam firmware → Raspberry Pi, to capture the feed and stream it over Ethernet, because the RTSP firmware is pretty bad.
It actually worked extremely well, but there is a fatal flaw with it, it never turns the Night Vision stuff on, so it became worthless at night.
Otherwise, it was the solution I was going to go with.
Totally agree with you! Maybe something for Wyze to look at. Again would like to hear some stats! What if Wyze upped the price to all of their products by $5-$10? Would that cover some costs?
I can’t wait to hear more info from Wyze in the coming weeks/months
I hope Wyze fixes this in the near future
Person Detection doesn’t work right with detection zones.
I have a camera pointed at my driveway. I have a zone set to eliminate the street. Most of the Peson Detection events I get are people on the street, outside of my set detection zone.
WYZE could eliminate a lot of Person Detection processing money if they would fix this bug in the app. In my case I would estimate 50% of my PD events are ones I don’t want.
Yes I noticed this as well! At this point even greater control of the box doesn’t help. I think Wyze is working on this in a future update.
I have three quick comments:
1, It would be great to know Wyze’s baseline cost - even ballpark - of this feature per camera.
2. What will the pricing be for cloud storage for Wyze Cam Outdoors and can all cloud services for all Wyze products be combined into a single bill / statement / payment?
3. I would prefer an option to make a one time annual payment.
Thank you!
We have to pay for cloud storage for the Outdoor Cam??!?!?
I wish this was possible! I hope Wyze does bundling in the future! Maybe a discount when we bundle a lot of cameras with multiple services?
No idea, actually, But if you take today’s message and extrapolate it to the potential bandwidth of all the outdoor cameras that are likely to be installed, it’s a very real possibility in my estimation.
Yes it does. I was just hopping that’s not a guarantee because I didn’t see that anywhere and certainly wouldn’t have bought Outdoor Cameras if Wyze has said we would have to pay for cloud storage. Hopefully this doesn’t happen…
It would have to be more than a storage device to do the processing rewuired for Person Detection.
