Person Detection Update: A New Experiment for Premium Features

Don’t forget to mention for the sake of other people that there is a free version too…although with more limited functionality, it does allow access to the Camera Cloud like we’re talking about and a few other benefits…but yes, I agree that the Pro is worth the small cost. I just used the Google Play credit I accrued for free from the Google Rewards App…so it was basically free anyway.

Today I found out that TinyCam has “background mode” and can generate its own phone alerts based on its own detection zones. (Important in part because one of my Wyze apps no longer notifies. ) This thing almost sounds too good to be true sometimes.

Yeah, I use TCP for their notifications sometimes for various things like a temporary specific detection zone, or to look for and alert me about my pets (ie: wanting to come inside), instead of just about humans (since Wyze doesn’t support pet detection, but TCP does), also sometimes as a baby monitor since with TCP it can stay active in the background or be used as use picture in picture while I do something else. It’s cool because you can leave all your main Wyze settings one way and then use TinyCam for a second set of settings temporarily. So many awesome customized options without having to alter Wyze settings or rely on Wyze to offer things natively (though they should).

The only issue is that Wyze requires everything to connect through their server with your Wyze username/password, so there lots of lost signal disconnects and thus TCP is not totally reliable because they rely on a perfect connection through Wyze, and then to your device too, and the more chaining between parties, the less reliable the connection. It can be frustrating for that reason, but mostly it is awesome, especially since I can view my Wyze and Eufy cams simultaneously and customize different notifications than are set or available from their native apps.

Nice, and if desired you can remove that extra hop / complication and set one or both brands to RTSP which (I am only guessing) should help stability under TinyCam.

I think it would help. The problem i have with tinyCam is unstable camera connections but I am using the server.

Yeah, I’ll consider RTSP on a cam or 2 and see if that helps.

I just signed up yesterday for the BETA version of TinyCamPro (beta allows Eufy support currently too) to see if TCP is more stable with Eufy, or if it is equally unreliable with them too. If I find it to work better with Eufy, I might hurry and buy a few more Eufy cams as their prices are currently roughly the same price as Wyze cams after shipping, etc. just NOW saw this on Slickdeals:

  1. Regular Indoor Cam comparison
    a) Wyze 1080P V2 = roughly $26 with shipping
    b) Eufy 2K = $30 shipping included
  2. Pan Cam comparison
    a) Wyze 1080P pan cam = $40+shipping
    b) Eufy 2K pan cam = $40 shipping included

Really tempted to get a few more Eufy cams while they are nearly identical prices, especially since they also actively support RTSP (whereas Wyze basically stopped all support for it and I’m told it’s pretty buggy and doesn’t work with a lot of other things).

Perhaps I should also test the RTSP on Eufy (right now I’m not using RTSP on it either) and see if that makes a difference with TinyCam for them too.

SOOOO tempting to just get more Eufy cams while they’re:

  1. Nearly double the resolution,
  2. all local (none of this break promises and threaten to charge and screw over customers between Nov 2019 - July 2020 who also trusted their announcement)
  3. free Person Detection,
  4. free Pet Detection,
  5. No Cooldown
  6. Free crying detection (for my newborn),
  7. RTSP actively supported
  8. Colored timeline of events
  9. Improved Audio and Mic capabilities
  10. Same price as Wyze despite all the extra functionality and benefits

Kinda feeling like it’s hard to see why I wouldn’t just get some more Eufy cams for everywhere that needs PD, and just use Wyze for anywhere that only needs backup recording (availability to be able to look back at stuff later on) or anywhere that just needs normal motion detection no more than every 5 minutes and missed events don’t really matter…

Today I saw evidence that my only xnor firmware cameras are now having their video processed in the cloud and hence Person Detection is facilitated in the cloud.
One of my cameras reported a Person in the background of the view which has never happened before. The Person was also outside the MASK set for the camera (V2).
Also, although my test camera has movement and person detection turned off… Sadly it’s still showing all motion and Person events on the app.

It’s a shallow reason but one of the few things I don’t like about the Eufy is that big spindly mounting arm. The Wyze’s is so much more compact and discreet. I couldn’t immediately find any 3rd party mounts and when I went to the product page I saw this as the second comment:

First, the stand cannot be removed. I wanted to try to mount this somewhere with limited space and was hoping I would be able to take off the stand but unfortunately, this is not possible. This camera would be great if the stand was a little lower profile, removable or just more adjustable.

I’ve thought that might be the case only because Xnor seems to be doing such a better job than it used to. Also the notifications are not immediate. There should be some way to test this.

I saw that code on Slick Deals earlier and used it as an opportunity to try one of the 2k cameras out. If it works well I’ll probably start switching out my Wyze cameras. I’d probably keep one Wyze camera to run the sense bridge for my mailbox sensor though since that one would be tougher to replace and I like having it. I just switched my Wyze motion sensor out that I use for some light in one room for a Zigbee one that connects to my Echo Plus’s built in Zigbee hub and it’s been much more consistent and reliable so far.
It’s sad really, the basic function of the Wyze V2 is or was great for the price, and I recommend Wyze to so many people. but everything seems to have gone downhill with Wyze. Buggy notifications, foggy internal glass lenses on the V2 with no answer or even acknowledgment from Wyze, missed events, buggy SD card playback, buggy app probably due to rushing out unready products like rebranded Mi bands, locks that don’t work consistently and drain batteries at least twice as fast as advertised. The list goes on and on. Not to mention the outdoor camera that was billed as the “biggest announcement since 2017” And doesn’t even preform half the functions of the basic V2 camera.

Is it taken into consideration on usage if I choose to keep using PD for free? I have two cameras that are enabled for motion capture 24/7, One is already enrolled in CMC, now CAMplus. The other was about to be enrolled, but is current in CAMplus free trial (except it stopped detecting anything, until I factory reset it last night…and then I saw motion (a person walking around his SUV) that should’ve been detected, but wasn’t. Would moving sensitivity back to 49 have fixed that or is that from using SD streams (since I’ve recently been having events fail to upload to cloud, so have local storage that I wanted to maximize … )

But, my remaining active cameras (currently 3, but I just received 2 more yesterday), I’ve had 4 WyzeCams (3 v2’s and black) and WyzeCamPan stolen…along the way… PD has been a nice bonus, that I’d like to continue to use, but these cameras are only looking for motion when I’m away, which have been rare events, and likely to continue to be rare. I wish I had thought to turn on my cameras before they were stolen, before my phone had run down while I was in the hospital…

More tucked in than Wyze in a “birdhouse” or Google for Reddit link on removing stand.

Oh nice, that’s not bad at all. Thank you.

I bought three cameras in November of 2019 and turned on the person detection immediately because that’s why I bought it and that’s the only events that I record.

One camera is turned off right now, but two others are on. The front door camera is still notifying me when a person comes in range. But the kitchen door camera did some sort of upgrade to call itself cam Plus.

I thought I was grandfathered in for all three cameras for person detection?

Why is only one of them continuing to send me person event notifications (pilot) and the other cameras are now trying to be cam plus subscribers?

Did you ever subscribe to CMC?

No just the in-person pilot way back when. Because I have SD cards that are already capturing everything.

It’s just weird because one of the cameras is still giving me notifications when it sees a person but the other two are not.

And one of the other two is now saying it’s a cam Plus temporary pilot.

I’ve never seen that before.

@jonesto949 - Agreed that it leaves a sour taste especially for those that bought the cameras early on for the reasons you mentioned. I especially loved the FREE “person detection” but it all seems to be going away. I’ve bought too many cameras at this point to get charged a monthly service fee per camera when they still have their flaws. I could live with having to restart to reconnect the cameras but I won’t pay unless the cameras become virtually flawless. I may start investing in other products if what was promised isn’t delivered.

As stated in the promo email "With Cam Plus, you’ll be able to record full-length videos, receive real-time alerts when people are detected,

Well, i’m not receiving real-time alerts when people are at my front door since subscribing to CamPlus. Very confusing.

On my iPhone, under Wyze “Active Subscriptions”, Cam Plus is setup for my front door camera. But also under “Active Subscriptions” is “Available subscriptions” “Person Detection (Pilot)”.

What do I need to do to get Person Detection working again? The “Front Camera” notifications has “Send Notifications” on, and “Person” on.

Id like to see what WYZE has ro say myswlf thats crap
