OK but like I said Wyze spoke to me. Guess they don’t know?
Tech support in general rarely knows much, but neither do I. Just guessing based on the screenshot above. Installing the app from scratch could tell you of course.
Right I did install from scratch on another device and I do not have it forced upon me. @UserCustomerGwen is there a way to clarify this one way or another. I do not have Person Detection enabled though so maybe that is what it is? If he’s beta he was probably testing it meaning it was enabled already? Because I just downloaded fresh version of the app to devices it was not on and I still do not see that above. I really do not want to have to pay for a service I don’t want or need.
Have not tried Wyze RTSP yet for same reason. Wonder if the Dafang Hacks firmware provides a stable enough to be useful RTSP that does not depend on a Wyze account. (too many projects and not enough time to test that yet either)
Anything that allows Wyze V2 cam hardware to still be useful without any internet or Wyze support may become rather valuable in future…

As people come to terms with what it really means - dozens of vendors having to maintain 24/7 connections to the devices in your home just so you can dim some lights - the proposition becomes less attractive to both sides
EXACTLY !!
And don’t forget the constant connection they also maintain to your bank accounts or credit cards.

Well hold on, there is still middle ground. We can at least first try the Wyze RTSP firmware with TinyCam treating them as generic IP cameras - just feed TinyCam the RTSP URL instead of the Wyze account credentials…
theoretically, it is almost a forgone conclusion.
currently 90%(?) use cloud, xnor.ai is one of few to make it possible to run locally, that is, from none to existence.
the resources for cloud and local is like high school vs elemental level.
if XNOR.AI can perform better than cloud, it will be no#1 company in the world, i doubt that they would be willing to sell them to apple.
local AI has lots of potential, but limited to the hardware they can use
Your summary sounds wrong on every point, sorry to say. What other cameras are doing this processing in the cloud? What leads you to believe that’s better? The “resources for cloud” is a tiny slice of the relatively expensive Amazon Web Services that Wyze has to devote to analyzing every clip. It’s a poor and inefficient way to do it. It’s like paying someone to come around every 15 minutes to shut your front door.
My Foscams and Wyze cams (some of them) are/were outdoor and always under eaves/porch covers and always out of the rain/sun. I was surprised that they lasted thru some heavy direct head wind rain storms without issues. I figure the Eufy cams will work outside but they have to be sheltered and not get wet and exposed to the direct sun but I am not worried about a $40-$50 camera getting ruined from the elements if it does. It is a reasonable gamble to take, the way I see it as long as you are careful with selecting its location. I would put mine inside facing thru a window too but I want the IR lights to work at night without lighting up my child’s bedroom window with the porch light on.
On another note the infrared motion detector on the new Wyze outdoor cam might be an issue for me, separate from not wanting the batteries issue, because I would use it for my driveway and the concrete has no shade and with the summer direct sunlight heating it up, it would likely to be triggered all the time or not detect people as advertised for my situation. I unfortunately, will have to be more reliant on person detection algorithms for this reason for my case.
Yeah I think a lot of people thought that. But when I really audit what I have that requires an internet connection I find most really don’t require that connection.
They do, but only because that’s they way they are programmed. Other than Wyze’s person detection I can’t think of one single IoT device I have that keeps any functionality in the cloud.
No voice recognition / “assistants” then?
Honestly, and I know I’ll get hated for this but is there a reason to have 14 days on the cloud? I usually look back 24 hours and delete what i don’t want to send to my computer the ones I do want. Just a thought. But of course my needs are not what others are.
Oh I have an Alexa Show and 2 (soon to be 4) Apple HomePods with Siri. So my house is full of electronic spies. Also have an ipad and iPhone and several computers so there are lots of potentially listening and watching devices.
Well yeah my point was that all that voice processing is hardly local.
I’m currently using the free trial of CMC+ and have no issue paying for the service after the trail is up, it’s a great feature to have, I will be purchasing this for sure for my outdoor cams when I get them but I have 1 suggestion, with the way clips are saved.
For example, I have my porch cam using the CMC+ and have it set for person only, which that seems to work, I get notified of persons detected and all other “general motion” footage just goes on to the cloud without me getting an alert, which I appreciate this but it makes for an extremely crowded cloud since I have a lot of landscape moving around, a stray cat coming and going from my porch, at night my video doorbells IR lights trigger and creates what looks like a light coming on, and a lot of vehicle lights setting motion detection off, it would be super nice if there was an option in setting to turn on so that we could automatically trash these clips, just saving the ones with a person in them. It would save lots of time going through clips and would save loads of cloud space.
A lot of us wouldn’t mind paying for the service if we used it. I’m not complaining per se about subbing but I personally have no desire or need to use PD and it isn’t very clear if we’re going to have to use it or not. If I needed to use it or wanted to then I would gladly pay the subscription cost.
Yes but that’s not a typical IoT device. Those are contact sensors, motion sensors, water detectors, lights, light switches, microwave ovens, refrigerators, etc. None of those devices with the possible exception of a refrigerator, really need or benefit from an internet connection yet there are many examples of those types of devices requiring an internet connection.
I agree with this. I look at the 12-second motion detection clips exactly 0 days a week. I’d easily give that up for person detection if it came down to it.
I probably only average 4 or 5 person detection events a day on the one of my 4 cameras that I even have it enabled on. On the other hand, I probably get 4-5 motion detection events an hour that I never look at.
Totally agree with the request for a “No Bug” cam mode. Maybe a mode that only functions at night. My garage cam is really a “Bug Cam” and the local bugs just love clogging up your servers with their fly-by antics at night.
I do appreciate the upfront transparency notification. Wyze always seems to be trying to “do the right thing”, even when “Opps” situations arise. Gotta like that!
