This has been a problem with this camera ever since it was new. Same with my last Pan Cam. Every so often it just stops recording to the SD card and i have to pop it out and back in to get it to work again. This time that’s not working. What can i do?
For one thing, I’d power down the camera or be sure to use the Settings ➜ Advanced Settings ➜ Manage MicroSD Card ➜ Eject MicroSD Card button so that the card can be removed safely. You may already be doing that instead of actually just removing the card while the camera is operating. If you’re not, though, there’s a chance that you’re removing the card while it’s attempting a write operation, and you could end up with data corruption on the card.
The second thing I’d consider is a full format of the card in a PC with the SD Memory Card Formatter from SD Association. Some Forum users swear by that utility for a good format prior to deploying a card, and there’s a chance it could give you a fresh start if the card itself isn’t hosed.
Others are going to ask for card details, so you might want to be prepared to share those here: brand, model, endurance rating (e.g., SanDisk High Endurance, Samsung PRO Endurance), capacity, format type (FAT32 vs. exFAT), etc.
Having said all that, I have a Cam Pan v3 that decided not to play nice with a SanDisk Extreme 256 GB card (exFAT) a while back, and I still haven’t had time to identify that particular issue. That card had been working for months of continuous recording in that camera, and it worked just fine when I safely removed it from the Cam Pan v3 and put it into a Cam v4, so I still don’t know what its deal is.
I second the SDcard formatter utility. I do that with ever new SD card I get and my cams have worked flawlessly with them for 18 months.
What types of cards are you using? You really should use an endurance rated card from a good brand like Samsung or Sandisk, it is possible your card(s) are just starting to go bad.
Other reasons for that behavior:
The power adapter has started to go bad, possibly just due to age, possibly from a power surge. You can try a different adapter, any USB adapter rated 2000MA/2A will do.
Cam is starting to go bad, some corrosion on the microSD pins, but usually that manifests as not recognizing the card at all.
But given it has done it since new, I’d be more suspicious of the SD card itself, or possibly dirty power, than the adapter or cam.
seems like a bad camera, if it’s in warranty notify Wyze, explain the situation, and ask for a new one.
I’m not the OP, but the OP reports it has happened with multiple cams. More likely an SD card or power issue in my mind.
I’d agree more on the power issue then the SD card.
I know I didn’t use the power adapter that came with a camera once, and I fought issues for a long time, until I realized and corrected my mistake.
I’ve actually never had an SD Card go bad, only the camera
I’ve had SD cards go bad, it certainly happens, especially when power is removed unexpectedly on a frequent basis, etc. But in this case I’m not necessarily saying bad SD card, just might need a good clean format (which the built in formatter isn’t necessarily the best one to use for that).
**Suggested restart worked. Thanks.
**I have had cameras stop recognizing the SD card after working okay for months. The issue for me is that the cameras are not easily reached, and I am not in the monitored location often. I would like to prevent this from happening when I am away. I wonder if Upgrades cause such, or if there is a way to remotely reconnect the SD card? This has happened with various cameras over the last few years.
Restarting the camera reconnects the SD card, you can do that remotely. I had one that I was running a known dying SD card in since it could go weeks before hitting the “bad” spot and I’d just reboot and reformat when it hit it. That cam now has a good card in it and never have to do that anymore.
If the only way to get it recognized is to physically remove and reinsert it, that sounds like the physical contacts are getting dirty or wet.
