My use-case is for a camera mounted on the front of our house to provide a live video feed to screens inside the house. Less a security thing than a “what the heck is going on in front of our house” 'cause we have no downstairs windows on the front to peer out of. Are Wyze camera’s still requiring a route up into the Internet and back down to accomplish this, or did they finally fulfill the desires of their real-time viewers?
I suspect the answer is “no” because a search (limited) of this forum found nothing to tell me otherwise. If there is a current thread that provides an answer just point me there. If Wyze is not the answer but someone has a suggestions as to what is I’d like to hear about that as well.
Thanks.
Using the wyze app, as long as they’re on the same WIFI with nothing blocking the feed, the video streams direct, not via the internet.
Using things like Tiny Cam it does have to go through their servers, but the impact is pretty minimal, mine always operate like that even with the app, since mine are on an isolated wifi network and cannot stream direct.
Using something like amazon fire stick and the wyze skill in the alexa app, honestly I’m not sure, someone who has that set up and is able to monitor network traffic would have to confirm. I suspect it probably has to loop through the internet though.
But like I said, with each cam only needing about 1mbit/second, I’ve had no issues with the “loop” setup.
There are some other options like Wyze Bridge or the old unsupported RTSP firmware for some cams too. But the best solution will depend what kind of screens you want to use (tablets, TVs, etc) and how many, along with what your internet speeds are.
Thanks. Do you know if there’s an Apple TV versions of the Wyze app? I suspect not, but that’s why we ask questions. I’ve got a couple of old unused ATVs and an old unused TV and I’d like to turn those into a “what’s up up front” viewing system.
Not being an apple guy I can’t say what would be the best way to do that. Have to tag @habib and @carverofchoice and see if they can provide some insight.
I believe there is integration to apple home, how to get that onto the TV I’m not sure (seems like it must be doable though).
If all else fails, a cheap generic android tablet running the wyze app with HDMI output support might be the easiest and will stream locally. iOS tablet would work fine too but I’m assuming “cheap generic” ones of those don’t exist.
Here is a solution that may work for you. What about a baby monitor camera looking out an upstairs front window? I just bought a Hello Baby brand for when my 11 month old grand daughter stays at my house.
Even though I have WiFi in my house the camera connects directly to the included monitor/screen and no WiFi needed.
My grand daughter sleeps in an upstairs room while my wife and I are downstairs. The unit works great and your budget can determine the screen size.
Unfortunately there isn’t one. I love my AppleTV’s a s they are so versatile but Wyze hasn’t developed a version for it and TVOS is totally different than iOS, so it can’t be hacked. You might be able to Air Play the stream from an iPhone or iPad, or even from Mac OS as the iPad version of the app runs fine on any Silicone MX Macs.
I have a feeling that @StevenA 's suggestion might be your best bet as long as you don’t need to stream more than one camera.
Dunno you can find android tablets under $50, and either use the built in screen, or use a USB-C to HDMI cable to feed it to a TV. Just have to make sure it does in fact support video output over the USB-C port but most do.
Heck an old unused phone with wifi could also serve the purpose, I have an old android phone that stays plugged in pretty much 24x7 for several years now and it has been of no detriment to it.
Obviously want to try and find one with a resolution somewhere close to 16:9 aspect ratio that TVs use but it doesn’t have to be exact.
I went the route of emulation (sort of)
Windows 11 with Android subsystem mod.
Loaded the Wyze app and watched on full tv screen.
Only issue was the occasional app dropping the feed and needing to click on the group again to restart.
Then I switched to Reolink which has more flexibility and a more stable live multi-cam viewer in both Android and iOS, also supports Windows, Linux, and other OS types.
(Note, some of the following is mostly playful humor, and not intended to cause offense to anyone who loves Apple, I actually don’t mind people having opposing preferences and I do truly believe having competition like this is good for everyone, so I would never really want Apple to go away)
FWIW, I avoid Apple as much as possible. I don’t know much about Apple and when people ask about something that is Apple-specific, I usually do the same thing as you and call out Somebody who I know uses them a lot.
Having said that, I did actually buy buy an old used Apple phone specifically so I could test stuff with it sometimes. Originally I got it to verify/confirm any issues people report with Wyze, and now sometimes I use it to figure out how to do something for family and friends or for a startup that I’m helping out with. But I really only even turn that thing on like once or twice a month at most. I only turn it on to check for Solutions myself if nobody else answers somebody who really needs help with something.
So it is okay to tag me for Apple stuff. I will probably usually not to help out much on Apple specific issues that aren’t the same on both platforms unless I happen to know the answer already, or if nobody else gives a good answer, then I will temporarily suppress my gag reflex to turn on the tester iPhone device and check it out and verify personally so I can help them out.
But I usually hope someone else who loves and is familiar with Apple answers first because I’m often pretty uncertain of Apple minutia.
For some reason I was (incorrectly) recalling that you had posted some info on something to do with iOS or maybe it was one of the examples you gave of using the old phone that I was recalling.
Maybe it was @Crease that uses Apple? I just didn’t want to call out @habib alone on everything Apple, feel like I’m singling out the resident Canadian
The last Apple product I owned was the Newton (I believe I had 2 of them). I mean, it was pretty cool.
Actually to be honest given some of the detailed posts I sort of thought you went “both ways” and assumed you had both in your arsenal, but definitely didn’t think you were strictly Apple.
Yeah, I have DEFINITELY posted several Apple-specific answers on here to help people out, so you probably did recall that accurately. I try to know/learn enough that I CAN help in a pinch by testing things out myself, but otherwise I try to refrain to reduce the amount of potential misinformation I may give inadvertently.
For me, if there is an iOS issue, I usually DM cyberdog_17 (he’s a Wyze Facebook Moderator, but really only comes here when I link him to something or call tag him in here) or other volunteers I ask are Spamoni (has an iPhone, and knows iOS really well, but Android is his primary) and R.Good (who switches back and forth between Android and iOS sometimes. Also, I will ask Newshound in here too since I know he prefers iOS.
But there are a lot of knowledgeable community members like Habib that I hope answer things before I get to that point I can’t remember all the other knowledgeable and tech-capable iOS users off the top of my head though. I just hope someone answers, and if they don’t, then I’ll either ask someone or do my own test to figure it out.
Yeah, partially true. Bought my first OLD iPhone 6s off Cyberdog, basically solely just to be able to test stuff on iOS for Wyze Beta app, confirm iOS App issues, and help out iOS users. That’s the only reason I got it. Now I will use it for a few other things, but I mostly avoid it as much as possible except to help Wyze or help users. Only a few other rare exceptions.
Wow, step away from the keyboard for a few hours and the replies just pile up. Lots of good ideas to mull over when the sun comes up. Thanks.
No worries, I don’t mind it a bit, that’s why I frequent the forums after all.
Great Question!, I look forward to reading through this thread to see what type of solutions, if any, are posted.
I have an extra TV that I’d love to do exactly what you are looking to accomplish. For me, Ideally something that I can display four camera’s on that TV ‘in real time’
I have two 4K ATV’s in the house, and love that platform for all my Plex and Streaming needs. But, I don’t see any sort of Wyze app available in the Apple Store, sadly. I wish there was, it would potentially be a great way to stream a live feed or events from the comfort of the couch.
hmm… I do have an Nvidia Shield available that I need to see if I can install the Wyze app on.
Same here.
I doubt Wyze will ever port the app to TVOS, they have hard time make it work on the iPad never mind AppleTV
I might be wrong, but you need Home Assistant as well.
Nope, which is why I occasionally refer back to this:
I don’t even track the ios or iphone-ipad Forum tags because I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be very helpful if the question is specific to that platform, but I end up in those topics sometimes because they’re co-tagged with a camera model that I do use (for instance).
I’m certainly not aware of one (again, my familiarity with Apple product is pretty limited), but someone recently asked about that again in this Wishlist topic:
