Our mailbox is mounted on a post by the curb. I would like to get notified when the door gets opened by the mailman. I already have a camera that can see the mailbox from the house, but it has no way to distinguish between the mailman and the other 50 cars that drive by every hour.
I could see a special adaptation of a fixed camera mounted on the rear of the mailbox peering in thru a small hole. When the door is opened, the light level will jump up momentarily. That would trigger a normal notification. Power would be supplied by a solar panel.
I initially thought the camera could be mounted inside the mailbox, but there may be federal regulations preventing it. Plus the metal enclosure may suppress the WiFi signal.
We may be able to do this with the existing fixed solar camera just using something like the inside window camera mount kit.
