I was unaware of this service, and after reading an article from Brian Krebs on the matter, I’m not sure what it’s expected to do for the average user. Granted, his description of the experience is four years old at this point, and it’s possible that the United States federal government has addressed some of his concerns since then (moving at the government’s pace?), so maybe the best advice is the standard “do your own research”.
At first, I thought it was useless but someone tried to use my ssn to open a credit card machine account years ago.
After reading the article, I found about four recent videos on YouTube that explains it.
Someone could use your ssn to get work and get paid but not pay taxes. IRS would come after you for taxes.
With rampant illegal immigration, chances on ssn theft has increased. Also 2.8 billion ssns were exposed online.
If you don’t have a social security account at ssa.gov, get one before someone else.
I encountered ID theft twice and take precautions. I was given an IRS pin for tax time.
I also freezed my credit on 3 agencies.
You don’t want to became scared and paranoid but you need to protect yourself.
The choice is yours.
Ever see the movie, “Beekeeper”. Not exactly the same issue.
EDIT: I thought I replied to a personal message and was surprised it was actually public. No security issues but I probably wouldn’t have offered movie suggestions.
I have a free Experian account paid for by AT&T since their data system got hacked.
I also have a LifeLock account. I got notices from both after the latest great hack off the National Public Data Base hack. I put everything in the Trust fund.
I had to alter the marshmallow delivery time because there is a possum that will eat one or two then hide the rest for future snacks. The gang is always late for snack time.
Here is how to check if your data was in the NPD breach (most likely your data is part of the breach). This site will show you your last two digits of your SSN and your address.
Only asks for First and Last Name, State and Birth Year, so not really secret info. I was able to see my neighbor is in the breach because he told me he just turned 81 years old.
I am in the breach too, but have had my credit frozen for years.
@ssummerlin great info on SSN lock, thanks for posting
