I figured that this would be the most appropriate category as it involves cameras and lifestyle devices (scales in particular). I’m curious about the data (videos, scale readings, etc.) that is collected from them.
Where is it stored, how it is protected and if/when it would be shared and with who.
While I would like to be hopeful that our data in the world is safe. It isn’t. No matter who has it. Even if Wyze protects it today, tomorrow something weird could happen and it’s in the wild.
And honestly; if you take a deep dive into data privacy, you will quickly learn that we have been sold out 20 years ago. Target, Equifax, Cambridge Analytica/Facebook, on & on & on… all had Data Breaches that they hid for years before disclosing. Or, they have been selling your data (not personal, more like spending habits and demographic information) for years and you have no idea.
Your personal information (address, name, phone, email, age) is just the start, data mining of peoples habits is much more lucrative because we tell them exactly how to market to us so we buy things.
I hate to be “that” guy… but, I kinda just gave up on caring about my data. It’s already gone.
P.S. Small edit… I’m so typical anyway. middle-aged, Gen-x dude, plays video games, watches Netflix, eats at PF Changs any chance he gets, wife, 2 kids. As Homer says… “BORING”.
I would guess that is a true observation in our clown world, but I did lock my credit and social security number. You can take some precautions like not leaving your wallet in an unlocked car. Simple stuff. Definitely glad I got out of social media since I retired.
I have my credit file Frozen with the 4 main credit bureaus Equifax, Experian, TransUnion and Innovis. Innovis is considered to be a lesser known but still the 4th big credit bureau.
I know our data doesn’t live in a bubble and technically at risk all the time. I was just wondering what their “normal policies” were which were not really clearly defined in the privacy policy
I don’t plan on getting any more jobs in my life. I am already receiving SS benefits. I can always unlock it, if I need to for some unforeseen change I need to get a job. Last time. I forgot to unlock my credit and my car lease still went through, but normally I should unlock it.
Our county has a title lock they introduced a couple years ago.
Anything else we can lock that we haven’t already?
Here is a good long list of more precautions to take. Many are common sense things I already do.
One more thing I do is I have a separate tablet I use only for online banking Apps and only on my home network. No surfing and no other Apps installed. That and 2FA I feel keeps my financial accounts safer.
I don’t do that but I do only manage finances from home. They say to use cash whenever feasible. There is only one place I use cash and that is with my barber. She only takes cash. Everyone else gets my credit card with or without a virtual ID. I have implemented more 2FA and use extensively long passwords and some user IDs. There is a lot we can do, I just want to be cover most issues without going insane.
One more thing I do is I get a text from my credit union if I withdraw or have a credit card charge above $500 dollars. If this service is offered to you, you can select the dollar amount to receive a text so it does not drive you insane.
I have an Apple Card and it sends a message to my phone about 5 seconds after it is swiped no matter what the amount. It also uses a virtual number for places that do not take apple pay. I just use it at the hardware store/grocery store and when I purchase
