IP camera instead of wifi

I know its been touched on but I really wish there was a wired, IP camera option. Criminals have become “Wyze” to the fact wifi cams can be rendered useless with a wifi disrupter. (see what I did there?) I really like the Wyze camera and ecosystem but the lack of a wired/IP option is forcing me to use some reolink cameras. I have a mixed network right now but as I upgrade in the future, I simply dont have much incentive to buy wireless.

Sounds like you need a security camera instead of a hobbyist camera. If you live in a bad neighborhood, seems other security needs to be addressed.

Welcome to the forum.

Exactly, something like what Reolink offers and many other professional grade “Security Camera” Brands

And even then you need to fortify your network with power backup because if their going to use WiFi jamming they likely will turn off house power too…

Burglar’s are known to turn off power to a house that they know is vacant and wait for alarm system batteries to die then return without worry of the alarm going off.

Reolink is toward the low end when it comes to wired cams with NVR, regardless of where you think they stand with the wifi cams. Even Lorex is a decent step up from them but if someone is really serious, time to get into Axis or the like. Obviously budget will dictate which one someone chooses.

I’m waiting for someone to ask what kind of car they should buy and have you suggest Reolink…

Have you seen Reolink’s car davey?

I think you should get one :winking_face_with_tongue:

Reolink is somewhat entry level. However, the feature set is great. Standalone ip POE camera. NVR is optional. Color night vision that honestly rivals higher end cameras. Lastly, unlike some brands, you can actually view their cameras in the google home app, not just the hub.

The mention was for serious home security cameras.

The real ones are not adding google hub features or other integrations. They’re focused on a reliable, secure, closed circuit system with very limited ways to gain access. No way I would be letting Google or Amazon link to my closed circuit camera system (or my wifi ones for that matter, but less of a concern there, obviously Wyze already has access).

For other use cases, sure, there are many options, Reolink is a good option for some, others are a better option for others. Depends what you’re doing/want, how serious you are, and how much $$ you have to spend.

Amcrest works well, too.

Yeah, a lot of people don’t think about this. Social media will say when they are gone on vacation, then go cut the power, wait a while (maybe even a whole day) then go back and the coast is clear. Often easy to verify by using an IR filter to see if the IR on the cameras are dead now.

It’s hard to counter that (besides not telling anyone you’re away from home and not post anything until you return, or have someone go live at your house while you’re gone.

Though there are some things you can do, such as get a system that pings devices regularly and reports when they are suddenly unavailable (ie: no power) and dispatch someone to investigate and fix it ASAP. Some people will have a device that uses fallback connectivity (ie: satellite, mobile data, etc), but that’s cost-prohibitive. Some devices will let you use multi-homing for redundancy, so you can actually use a neighbor’s WiFi as a backup connection and have the device have it’s own long term battery backup too.
Can also give your neighbors cameras for Christmas and ask them to point it toward your house as a backup.

Lots of other solutions, but almost nobody does any of that, and the truth is, if someone really wants in your house, especially while you’re away, you’re not stopping them…the best you can do is try to have reasonable deterrents and do things that can help make it more likely they can be identified.

Good I don’t use IR.

Agreed. Locks are to keep honest people honest.

And there are other tools for the dishonest ones.

In reality, we know what these cams are good for and what they aren’t. Even if you keep them online, they’re not going to stop a thief, and they’ll be out before you see the notification, review it, call the police, and wait for them to arrive. And they’ll be covered head to toe with no identifying marks.

Anyone truly serious/paranoid will have a closed circuit, hard wired system with significant battery backup time.

Our area recently had a group of porch pirates doing things like this - flooding the channels with much stronger signals so security cameras couldn’t communicate. Couldn’t one put memory cards in and set them to record everything? You won’t stop the pirates, but at least you will know who broke in and the police will have video of them doing it.

Yes, nearly all Wyze cams have memory card slots. All of mine have cards in them and most continuously record, a few are event-only. Even if I had a subscription for cloud recording, I’d still do this for that very reason (and also because it records a lot more than just a short time around each event).

Of course the cameras have to be out of reach as they can just rip them off. In reality, most of the criminals are taking advantage of the fact that face masks are not abnormal anymore and wear a covid mask, hat, etc. So recordings are of limited use in a lot of cases. All they care is that you don’t get a notification/can’t see what is happening until they’re gone.

There are new IP / network cameras by ARLO that also has HomeKit on it. Brand new, launched like 2 weeks ago. Wyze please have a look at it!
