When I first saw the design, I had similar thoughts. I thought it resembled Cam Pan v3 and so figured it was going to have motorized pan and tilt until I read and learned more about it. Even though it’s a fixed-position camera (after manual adjustment, anyway), I think the field of view allows it to cover a lot of area, and that’s one of the things I really like about it.
As far as lighting goes, you can control that in at least a couple of different places:
- On Bulb Cam’s Live Stream screen, there should be an image in the lower-left corner of the view pane that looks like a Bulb Cam icon. You can tap that to turn the Bulb Cam (and any connected Accessory Bulbs) on or off, similar to tapping the spotlight of a Cam v4 or Cam OG on or off (using a different icon in the same location). That’s pretty much your manual control.
- The Ambient Light settings are more of an automatic thing. That’s what I really like, because I’m currently using this where I previously had CFLs and no camera, and that circuit is controlled by a smart Wi-Fi switch that I had Google Home turning on or off based on sunset times. Now I just leave that circuit on (for the camera) and control the overnight lighting schedule with Ambient Light, activating even brighter light with the Motion settings (like you show in your screenshot).
Even when you’re using Ambient Light settings, you can still override that with the manual control on the Live Stream screen. The app should prompt you with a pop-up the first time you try to do that.
I get what you mean about the length of the telescopic rod, too. In my case with that fully extended, it’s just the right length to clear the sconce. I’d really like to see it in black, though, because I think that would blend in even better than it currently does.
I’m with you on better settings explanations, too. I do think they’re getting better at doing this in the app, dropping informational notes in some places instead of leaving so much unused space on certain settings pages, but there’s always room for improvement.
