Indepth review of using Battery Bank as UPS for V3 cameras

OK, I think I found a good solution for my backup power to my camera.

The vendor says it can be used as an UPS. Customers say they use it as an UPS. It advertises charging the battery and operating the device together. I have tried it and it works like it should. There is NO DELAY WHATSOEVER. There is an on/off switch for battery backup power. Even in the OFF position, the charger can charge the battery and operate the device simultaneously. ā€œPass Throughā€. In the ON position, if AC commercial power is lost, the battery keeps the device working. I tried it on the V3 camera and absolutely NO DROP OFF or reset of the camera.

The only suggestion I have is that it comes with a 12v 500ma charger. That is fine for charging the battery but weak for operating the camera. I had a lot of power packs sitting around the house and used a 12v 1.5amp charger. You can never have too big for charging (The battery circuit will only draw as much as it needs). But the 1.5amp adapter can run the camera this way. My only issue with it is it has 5 bars for charging, but at full charge only 4 light up. Could be a bad bulb. I charged it up and then used it on battery only as a battery bank (which it’s also used for) to charge up my ipad that was almost dead. It fully charged it in about an hour and still had 2 bars left. So I know it’s working fine. And the camera is going to use a lot less power than charging an IPAD, so it should last quite a few hours until commercial power is restored.

For only $24 on amazon it’s a good deal. They make a larger model (Twice as many mah) for about $34. And even bigger ones if you need it. It is Lithium Ion and not polymer, but I’m ok with that. It uses 18650 batteries (3 for this model). It says the batteries aren’t ā€œuser replaceableā€, but for anyone who knows how to use a soldering iron they can easily be replaced. I looked inside at it. This definitely looks like a good alternative. I will be buying a 2nd one for my other camera.

I have to give the seller Talentcell a big Kudo also. I contacted them about the 1 light bulb not lighting and the replied immediately. I ready on other reviews that another person had the same issue. It wasn’t a problem; the charger still operated properly, didn’t overcharge, lasted a long time, etc. Just a quirk. The company actually makes a much larger version 8300ma and an 11,000ma version which only has 4 bulb charge indicator in them. It’s possible they simply put in the wrong indicator. Either way; the company responded immediately to my inquire. After they determined that I did everything properly, they asked me for my full name and address and would send me a replacement directly. I mentioned that the item is working fine, just 1 little light bulb and it wasn’t a big deal. They said they’d send me a replacement anyway. They even said not to send the one I have now back or to return it to amazon. Just keep it. WOW… Good customer service. I feel a little guilty, considering I had planned on buying a 2nd one for my other camera, and now I’m getting a 2nd one for free. But I DID TELL THEM that I was fine with the one I had. I was just curious if it had a bad bulb or if there was any problem with the unit. They said no, because the light bulbs aren’t directly involved in the overcurrent, overvoltage, or overtemp circuits. Those are monitored separately. And after 48 hours of the battery bank/UPS being operational with my camera, it’s still Ice Cold, meaning that the batteries aren’t overcharging. There would be SOME temperature relevance. Anyway; so far so good. I like it. And again; a great company and customer service.

Yes, it does also do 12vdc out. It comes with a ā€œYā€ splitter so you can have the 12vdc charger/power pack in and also a 12vdc source out; which also provides 12vdc out along with the 5vdc usb during power outage. (don’t forget to have the on/off switch on). Basically, leave the switch on all the time. Again; if you’re going to use anything that draws more current than the input, get a beefier power pack. The 12vdc power pack provided is 500ma; which is about 1.2amp for 5vdc. But considering the v3 camera comes with a 1amp 5v adapter, I think the provided power pack is a little small to operate your connected device AND maintaining the battery. But assuming the power outage wasn’t too long, the provided pack should catch up to recharging the batteries in time. But I have a lot of 12vdc power packs sitting around, so I just used a 12vdc 1.5amp wall wart I had hanging around.

I bought the 3000ma model. For a wyze camera only recording during motion that’s big enought. Fully charged, with no AC power in (simulated power outage), the battery bank/UPS didn’t lose any bars of charge after 3 hours. So, I would guess it would probably hold for at least 12 hours. But the 6000ma model is only $10 more ($34), and that would probably last for a very long time.

ssumerlin; one other thing. Probably not a big deal, but if you are going to use a different power pack to run it, the output voltage is 12.6vdc. Might not make much difference vs a charger wall wart that says 12.0vdc, but if I’m going to change out anything, I personally like to keep the same standard. Especially not knowing how they built or designed the product. Fortunately, 12.6vdc is as common as 12.0vdc power packs. You can find tons of them on amazon for about $8-$10. Just a thought. But if it’s just going to run 1 camera, the provided power pack is probably large enough. If you get the 6000ma version it comes with a 1amp power pack. I went with the 1.5amp I had sitting around because it’s also 12.6vdc but because I have a USB splitter and am running 2 v3 cameras off of it. Anyway, just wanted to let you know. Mike.

Yea, the 12.6vdc input power pack also has built in overcharge and overvoltage protection. It also has a red light that turns green when the battery pack is fully charged. The company sells a 2a power pack on amazon, it’s a little pricey at $15, but it’s designed the same with the red/green light made for charging lithium batteries. Here’s a link

But if you’re only going to use it for 1 camera, the provided power pack will work fine. Like I said, I only swapped out power packs because I’m running 2 cameras on it and it would be pushing it to run both on the provided 500ma power pack.

ssummerlin; just an FYI. I went ahead and bout the talentcell 12.6/2A charger for my 2 camera setup to use with the 3000mah backup UPS I posted earlier. Definitely a good purchase. With the existing 12.6/500ma charger wall wart, it definitely could charge the batteries and operate the single camera, but it was on the edge. Meaning, the charger light is red when charging and turns green when completely charged. With the camera connected and working as an ups, the camera was using as much power from the charger as it was providing; hence the light was always red. Not a big deal; the batteries were still 5 bars at 100% charged. But with the 12.6v/2A power pack, the batteries are charged 100% and with 2 cameras operating, the light stays GREEN on the charger wall wart. Nice to know that there’s plenty of power available for the cameras and the batteries. I might buy a 2nd 2amp charger wall wart for the other single camera on the 3000mah battery backup UPS system.

I need this configuration for one of my backyard cams. Both of my frontyard cams are on UPS already.

cool. I am very happy with the setup now. Instant battery backup. Instant backup without any camera reset. Tonight, when I get home, I will be doing a quasi test to see how long the backup lasts. I’ll pull the power and let the cameras roll. I might even put them on continuous record just to see. Let it go until it’s down to about 3 of the 5 bars of power. Just so I get a feel of how long the backup is. In reality, I only need a few hours. If my power isn’t back in that amount of time, either I’ve already gone to generator backup, or if I’m not home, then my other big UPS’s running my network routers, modems, switches, etc. are probably out of power by then also; and the cameras probably wouldn’t matter any longer anyway. But it will be nice to see how long the backup can do.

Very cool. The setup you suggested is my next purchase.

I am quite satisfied with the setup. It’s been a few days and it’s working perfectly as I wanted. I have one in the house running a camera in the house and a 2nd camera with a window mount aimed at the back porch. That’s the one I use the 2 amp power adapter for. The other Talentcell 3000ma backup I have in the garage with the camera outside aimed at the driveway and front porch. (There’s already wire access from inside the garage to the flood lights outside). I use the 500ma adapter provided with the Talentcell. (500ma is enough because it’s 12vdc output. Which is more than 1amp at 5vdc for the usb output. If on battery backup for a couple hours, it does take longer to recharge the batteries with the camera connected too. This is another reason I have the 2amp charger for the 2 camera setup. But it still works great. Anyway; they are both working perfectly.

I have experimented with the Talentcell and whether I pull the power adapter from the battery backup or I pull it directly from the AC outlet, the camera doesn’t stop, glitch, reset, or anything. I watch it live on my phone with the bandwidth throughput meter still chugging along. And when I plug back in the power, again no disruption. Works great.

I plan to buy one for the v3 cam in my kitchen window looking out into the backyard and pool deck. I believe the 3,000 mAh should be all I need.

Did you get a chance to see how long the UPS will provide power without it being plugged into an AC outlet?

I did do a time test, but it was taking too long. (That’s a good thing). After an hour and a half, it still had 4 bars. And that’s with 2 cameras connected. (Motion only, not continuous recording). So I figured, with 2 cameras, it will last at minimum around 6-8 hours. With one camera, closer to 10. More than enough for me. If I’m home during such an outage, I’ll probably have my generator started by then if they haven’t gotten commercial power back up. If I’m away when such an outage happens, then I have a lot more problems, such as all the food in the fridge and such. Plus, my normal UPS’s which run my network modem, routers, switches, etc. probably won’t last 8 hours, so while my cameras might still be up, I wouldn’t be able to get notifications from the cameras or check in remotely after 8 hours. So for me, the 6-8-10 hours is more than enough. Personally, I think with one camera, it will last 10 hours easily.

Just found out that the power bank / UPS passes power even with the switch off. I didn’t realize the switch was off till I pulled the plug to test the UPS and had no power. Turning switch on solved my problem. Duh. :crazy_face:
