A few posts in another topic made me think of Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970). That’s one I recall first seeing on TV after it was edited with the pan and scan method to fit the 4:3 aspect ratio, and it gave me the impression that this type of panning was a stylistic filmmaking technique in science fiction flicks from that era. I was mildly disappointed to learn later that this was merely an artifact of transitioning these pictures to the small screen. I still dig the movie in non-pan widescreen format, though.
