Ethernet connection to V3 cam?

If your router has POE ports they would be labeled:

Ok thanks. Neither of my two routers are marked like that, but I checked the specs from the box and it’s not PoE. Oh well.

For anyone looking for inexpensive. real POE cameras, I purchased these. They support ONVIF and should work with almost any NVR. They also have a “star light” sensor similar to the V3.

Finally figured it out. Not “real” POE, but the closest we can get until someone comes out with a POE ethernet → micro usb adapter that sends both power and data to WyzeCam V3 connector.

Way too much trouble for one camera.

Exactly - this was exactly the Rube Goldbergian solution I was referring to above:

Been watching this thread since it started. Awesome work @sysop! Most would have given up long ago. And, for those wanting these cams outdoors far outside of WiFi range or in high traffic areas like yours, this provides a solution.

While it is a bit patchwork, the fact that it works is the real gem :gem: here! That is proof of concept! I am sure Edison’s first hundred tries :bulb: weren’t that polished either. Now we know the adapter that needs to be invented to streamline the throughput between the two connections.

Keep up the great work! It is certainly appreciated.

Glad it works for you.

I refer everyone back to the question asked in the original post of this thread. No, it ain’t pretty, but yes, I did find a way to “hack in an Ethernet connection to a V2 or V3 cam”.

It is my hope that sometime in the near future, some adapter manufacturer will see this and develop a POE ethernet → micro usb adapter connector. Or, Wyze will make this feature a part of it’s firmware and develop and market it’s own adapter. We had to wait 2 years for RTSP, so perhaps this will take another year or two.

BUT (huge grin), I do have it working now!

Including all the adapters and related cables, what was the total cost? How do you plan to mount it with the additional adapters and cables?

Rounded up cost: $35. I would mount camera on junction box, and stuff all the excess adapters and cables into junction box so that there is only the POE ethernet cable coming in and the micro usb cable to camera coming out.

Can this now record to any nvr continously? That way I get a wired poe run continously with a cheaper nvr? Can it also use cam plus?

This setup will allow you to connect and power your WyzeCam V3 in the same way you would connect and power any POE camera.

However, please note the following:

  1. wz_mini_hacks must be installed. GitHub - gtxaspec/wz_mini_hacks: wz camera mods... make your camera better.
  2. wz_mini_hacks must be configured:
    a. USB Ethernet Adapter support enabled
    b. RTSP enabled
(note that I have RTSP enabled via docker-wyze-bridge as opposed to wz_mini_hacks)

As for Cam Plus, wz_mini_hacks does not disable any Wyze app firmware functionality, except optionally you disable wifi when you enable USB ethernet. Wyze firmware is not affected by this hack, which is why I love it!

Hope this helps.

FWIW I have been using the UCTRONICS adapter with Wyze camara for over a year and have not faced any issues with power or ethernet connectivity.

Do you mean this one:

yes - with Wyze cam v3. Earlier with older version of invasive wyze hacks and then moved to the latest more elegant mini hack.

You must have gotten one of the good ones before the bad batch, because I just purchased one from Amazon and it did not work (as POE ethernet adapter for WyzeCam V3) – at all. I even tried adding power via the micro usb port, but no luck.

If they resolve whatever the issues are with this one, or someone develops another one, then the current complexity of adding poe and data over ethernet for V3 cams is reduced tremendously.

p.s. I could hear the camera clicking when device is plugged into power, but no lights on cam, no connectivity.

Maybe someone could redneck data through one of these or possibly utilize one to insert data onto the path from an additional adapter? They work fine for powering the cams from a conventional POE source.

I’ve inquired about data support/capability with these adapters and received no response. As pointed out in another thread, Wasserstein would probably be touting that feature rather specifically if it existed. The pins are certainly there.

How did you know you were on Wired Ethernet and not WiFi? Did you lock it down?

First off, the IP address and MAC were of the adapter, not the WyzeCam. Secondly, I was able to ssh into that IP. And thirdly, wifi is disabled when ethernet is enabled in wz_mini_hacks, so all connections to the device had to come through the wired connection.

And yes, I locked it down in my router by making the IP static.
