Hi, It would be great to have the climate sensor measurement range expanded. I would like to have the ability to know the freezer and refrigerator are working when I’m away. I already have the ability to monitor room temperatures from the smart thermostats I have in the house.
A sensor with wider range combined with its ability to place in remote spots would be a great addition and allow monitoring the places where thermostats don’t go. Basements, garages, attic, freezer/refrigerator and other spots just for fun.
I have a number of the temperature/humidity sensors in various places, including one outside, one in my attic, in the furnace room, my home office, one in the garage and in a utility room behind the garage.
The attic and outside sensors experience the extremes of temperature, and it appears that the temp sensors have a signed 8 bit integer range. The attic can measure up to 127 degrees, then when it goes above 127, it then flips to report -128 ( being a signed 8 bit value, it can only go from -128 to 127) and then goes up from there, and when the temperature goes back down to 127 or below, then it flips back to 127 and goes back down from there. The lowest it has shown outside around here in the last 2 years is 17 degrees.
In theory you could put it in the freezer and it would give you reliable temperatures, but it probably wouldn’t be able to communicate to the sensor base station very well through the freezer walls.
