Cam OG Telephoto appears to have failed

Boo Hoo,

I think my Cam OG telephoto IR bit the dust.

Flashing, cracking and popping to app live view, turned IR off, just a gray silent mess.

Same power source as the regular OG stacked on top and it works, so not the brick.

Snow and rain today, might have gotten wet, seals shot or just died.. It’s a bit protected under the deck so I’m leaning failed.

Looks out of stock or not made anymore, bought October 2023. Lasted long enough I guess. Not sure if I can post a short vid, above description covers it I guess.

Worked today about 1PM, I’ll check operation in daylight tomorrow to confirm failure maybe. Anyone agree? IR failure?

I would guess just out of stock, since I believe I saw them on sale recently.

Probably need to check it with light to see if it is just something with IR or the overall cam.

I remember I thought mine was messed up but it was a spider that decided to hang out in the lens, it was causing the image to constantly recalibrate, but not popping or anything like that.

I revived a totally dead Panv3 by putting it in a bag of rice for a day or two, if it is water related, might work for you too. But you’d want to figure out where it got in to try and seal it up - does your power cord have a drip loop?

Thanks & yes, a power splitter runs them both since 2023, connections are under the deck, taped connections, Scotch quality electric tape too, lol, but with wind etc., the cams do get a little bit wet.

I’ll check out cables, connections and bring it in “maybe” tomorrow, too cold & snowy tonight., Don’t wanna break something sliding around in snow.

Not a big deal, it lasted since 2023. I’ll report back what I find out, but think it’s failed. Always ran good while it ran. OG stacked on it still works, same power source and splitter.

Not replacing it in winter anyhow, too cold and too old.:old_man:

I’ll watch stock and just order one if they reappear, if investigation confirms failed IR.

I have the stack set too, a few months older than yours. They have very little protection and both still going strong.

I did run two separate power cables from two adapters as I didn’t like the Y cable that came with it. Obviously can’t hurt to test a different power supply (at least 1.5 amp). Voltage divider rule says any slight difference in resistance can cause an imbalance, maybe the power supply has started to go and the regular OG is getting a bit extra, not leaving enough for the TEL.

Just fiddling with, cycling power, flipping IR on and off brought a little visibility, but not near normal. Maybe the sun baked baked it, gets enough of that.:joy:

I wouldn’t give up on it without at lest testing it on a different cable and power supply, maybe by itself without the splitter. Obviously once mother nature deems it safe to do so.

Of course if it is a power issue, I’d want to unplug it for now just so it isn’t trying to run underpowered which could do more damage.

Of course depending on the price, may not be worth the hassle (not sure what they’re going for these days).

Agreed, I haven’t ruled out the power brick yet. Probably should’ve oversized the brick, hindsight, 5V 2A 10W, Worked. I’ll holler back if I can figure out what it is.

I have a spare OG I can test on the power sources and cables, if weather allows. I did kill power to both. Wyze outdoor plug. LOL

$39.98ish. lol

I was thinking I saw <$20 on sale, but I don’t recall whether that was directly from Wyze or from Amazon. That’s probably why they’re gone.

A day late and a dollar short, all cyber sales gone, I checked both sites. Well, leftover Pan V3s are going cheap enough until they’re gone too. I have 3 don’t need more Pan tilts. The OG was on sale, like $14.98 or something.

Yeah, and roughly a year ago I picked one up from Amazon when it was $9.98. I don’t expect to see that price again, but hopefully you’ll be able to find Cam OG Telephoto at a decent price if you want or need to replace your current device. I have one that I’ve used for a couple of applications, and the magnification does come in handy sometimes.

Last year between black friday and xmas there were plenty of deals. Standard OG was $10 at home depot (and briefly amazon I think), v4 was $17.xx at micro center or 2 for 35ish at costco, etc. I’m not sure if the TEL goes on sale commonly or not, but maybe it will pop up somewhere.

Daylight has arrived and so has the live view of the OG telephoto. I’ll take that as definite proof something IR fritzed out in the camera. Agreed?

Got a used like new lol from Amazon for $25.

LMBO, it appears, so far, that whatever glitched, unglitched all by itself. So far.

Oh well, a spare tele coming either way, just in case it decides to keel over. (If Amazon follows thru)

I wonder if your IR filter just got stuck last night. As part of your testing did you try toggling night mode on/off a couple times? It is possible it could still be power related too, or just a total fluke.

Might be a sign that it is on the verge of getting stuck permanently or even intermittently so a $25 replacement isn’t a bad idea. I’m guessing a lot of the TELs that get returned to amazon is people realizing they were too much zoom for their intended use.

Yes, I toggled IR all over, cycled power a couple times, it was off overnight, and it went silent when IR was off.

I saw today that Wyze has some refurbished listed now too, $19.98, but with shipping, about a wash vs Amazon, plus I can press Amazon if it’s not mint as advertised. A spare is good with this one acting flaky. Time will tell now I guess. Power unknown, still cold and snowy.

Which may explain intermittent issues, plastic likes to shrink and expand with temp changes, maybe a bit of sun today freed up the stuck IR filter. Knock on wood mine all handle the weather fine, though we don’t get crazy cold or hot here that often.
