Bulb CAM vehicle detection

Forgive me for needing so much help. This Bulb CAM is MUCH more complicated than I predicted.

No sure, but I think what is happening is confusion about vehicle detection. I assumed the camera would detect a vehicle driving by in front of my house as a ‘vehicle’. Maybe it does or doesn’t. Being it detects motion, I guess it will detect just about anything that is moving. Sounds reasonable.

What I think is happening is it is detecting the parked car in my neighbor’s driveway (not moving). Kinda makes sense. Anything in motion is moving and detected …. right? I keep getting dozens and dozens of events with his car parked stationary in each capture …. though there is a building, sidewalk, MY driveway (runs alongside his) in the frames also which of course are stationary.

On the other hand, the camera sees what is sees … a car parked in the driveway, part of a building, some sidewalk, and MY driveway too.

Don’t know if it has to do with the floating green rectangle that goes all over the place … randomly or otherwise. This green rectangle befuddles me no end.

First thing is to understand is what Wyze means by the word ‘vehicle’. Does Wyze think it has to be moving to be a vehicle or is it a vehicle that is moving or stationary? By the way, I live on a street with very little traffic. I have seen people walking by though. Yet to see a moving ‘vehicle’ pass by the house / just these events …. a bunch of ‘em, of his car parked in his driveway next door. Sorry for all the ‘whining’, but had no idea there was this much to a good security camera. I”m actually embarrassed to post this. Again, about all I have is the quick start guide. Just found out a few minutes ago, I can view all my cams on my computer if I log into my Wyze site. I don’t have anywhere to go except this Forum. You will all be sick of me in short order.

I believe it’s currently (still) the latter, so that if something happens within the camera’s view to trigger a motion detection event (depending on how you have  Settings ➜ Detection Settings ➜ CAMERA SENSITIVITY set) and if you’re using a subscription (which apparently you are), the image(s) that initiated the detection event are analyzed by Wyze’s servers, which report (tag) every Smart Detection they see in the event image(s). I believe Wyze has said elsewhere that they’re working on ways to tune vehicle detection, and many users have complained for a long time about being overloaded with unwanted notifications of parked cars from their Wyze Cams. This experience is not exclusive to Bulb Cam.

That’s Motion Tagging. I think it’s helpful when you want an idea of what movement in a given camera view has triggered motion detection events, but you can turn that off if you want:  Settings ➜ Detection Settings ➜ Motion Tagging .

You should be able to reduce these somewhat by enabling a Detection Zone:  Settings ➜ Detection Settings ➜ Detection Zone ➜ Detection Zone . When setting the Detection Zone, whatever you cover with a grey box is supposed to be excluded from the area of the camera’s view where you want it to be able to make decisions based on motion that it sees, so it acts like a mask. The clear squares are for where you want the camera to detect motion.

When setting the Detection Zone (which can be a trial-and-error process), it may be useful to leave Motion Tagging enabled. Being able to see what triggered a motion detection event (surrounded by the green rectangles) can guide you in making changes to your Detection Zone until you achieve the results you’re seeking. Then you can turn Motion Tagging off if you no longer want the green boxes.

Kinda figured it was something like that. As you know, the zone screen on my phone … horizontal rectangle, 100% checkerboard, all boxes black. In the center of the (big) rectangle is a smaller horizontal rectangle with a green frame and checkerboarded black. Inside that center/smaller rectangle is an image of my front porch stair railing. I take it the contents of that center rectangle is what the camera lens sees. Everything outside the small rectangle is some kind of no-man’s land(?)
I can tap on any blackened checkterboard square. Everything is checkerboarded … outside the center rectangle and inside as well. I can tap a black box no matter which it occupies … outside and inside center rectangle. So …. I go to tapping black checker boxes. Each turns a darker black, indicating it is ‘selected’.. Experimentally, start with the center most checkerd box ….. dead center. Turns darker green frame. I tap a few more boxes within the center rectangle. Each turns ‘selection’ green frame. I ‘framed’ a couple adjacent to each other and a couple more solitarily. Wondering what would happen, I tried a checkerbox outside the center rectangle (a few random ones) out there in what I called no man’s land. A couple adjacent and a couple in solitary and each got their enhanced green frame. I click SAVE. Take a look at that camera and first of all there is the step railing, there are bugs flying around, but the whole phone screen is blinking on and off. Nothing I blacked out is evident (nothing I blacked took effect). I don’t know if I am looking at a recorded event event (I don’t think I am) or at a live camera. I think it is live …. AND it stopped blinking. Nothing is blacked out though from a Detection Zone standpoint. Apparently I have a long way to go to master Detection Zone managment. Thank you for your help.

I’m not sure what you’re trying to describe. When you’re viewing the Detection Zone screen in the app settings for a given Cam, there’s a live preview image that shows you what the camera is seeing at that moment. I don’t recall what the default Detection Zone is for Bulb Cam if you haven’t activated it before.

What you should be seeing on the Detection Zone screen is that live view with a grid overlay, and if you start tapping individual squares to exclude them (make them grey or darker) or include them (make them clear because you want them to be included in the Detection Zone), then you’ll also see Undo and Clear options beneath the live view. If you tap Clear, then every square goes dark/grey because you’ve eliminated the Detection Zone and selected everything in the view to be excluded for detection. That’s one way to get a clean start and then add/clear only the squares where you want motion detection to trigger an event. Remember these:

  • clear/light square ⇉ included for motion detection ⇉ Detection Zone
  • grey/dark square ⇉ excluded from detection ⇉ “exclusion zone”
  • green line ⇉ denotes the border between areas of inclusion/detection and areas of exclusion

Also note these:

  • When selecting squares/boxes, you can tap these individually to toggle them between inclusion/detection and exclusion, or you can tap and drag your finger (or a stylus) around to “draw” lines or areas of selected or deselected boxes.
  • You can tap Undo when it’s visible below the view pane to revert changes.
  • See the “Detection Settings and Zones” Help Center article for more information.

If you haven’t already, you can try the Help Center. Some people find the articles and/or chatbot there helpful. (Some really don’t like the bot.) Those are always options if you want an immediate answer and don’t want to post here and wait for someone to respond.

Also, when troubleshooting Detection Zones, if you’re not getting the results you want, then coming back here and posting screenshots of these things can be helpful:

  • Your current Detection Zone settings
  • A representative snapshot of an event that you did not expect to receive with those settings (especially if this shows the green Motion Tagging box)
  • Your Detection Settings screen

It’s a trial-and-error process and can take some time and experimentation to tweak it until you get the results you want.

I mentioned in another thread that I have decided to try a different product. It may or may not be easier to deal with. I very well may come back toBulb Cam. Depends on what the future holds. I can only thank you profusely for your help. Most appreciated.

You’re welcome, and I saw and replied in the other topic, as well. Again, if you change your mind about Bulb Cam, then please feel free to share some screenshots as noted above and ask other questions here in the Forum.

You are a Prince of all men. Thanks for everything..
