Starling has been sticking its head in the bluebird feeder and grabbing a mealworm. This one went in too far and got traumatized. Notice the bluebird at the entrance observing the starling.
I wonder what the Bluebird curse words were? What ever, that poacher couldn’t get out off there fast enough.
Take a good look at the last few seconds. It looks like the sparrow got in too far, and the bluebird poked it in the butt making it go inside.
Decided to remove all the birdhouses except for the bluebird house. Starlings were making nests in every single one. Or so I thought. Pulled one down and dumped it in the trash and 5 shiny blue eggs fell out.
The entrance is too small for a bluebird so they might have been robin’s eggs. Still upsetting.
Switch to / houses. All you need is a storm drain or you could be nice and build them one of those Tiny or Micro Houses. “Tom’s Habitat for Critters” and on the + side they would leave your house alone. Sorry to hear about you Bluebird friends getting chased off by squatters.
Neighbor made a house for the feral cats.
Told her it might attract undesirable wildlife, like
They are snow birds. Leave in September and come back in May.
I shared the camera with them so they can check on their house.
Took down all the birdhouses except for the bluebird house. Stopped putting out wild bird feed which the starlings like. Not so much the black oil sunflower seed.
Had a bright yellow male finch visit my solar water fountain.
Note how the water shuts off when the finish lands.
Very pretty!
Momma bluebird has been busy building a nest. I looked at the events and about every 3-4 minutes since sunrise she brings more pine needles.
Dad doesn’t know how to build a nest, or sit on the eggs, or feed the chicks. His main jobs are to guard the birdhouse and feed momma bluebird when she is sitting on the eggs.
If momma bluebird dies, the chicks die.
And Mom doesn’t know how to cook, that’s why Dad decides on the meals.
From what I read, mom bluebird does all the work. All dad does is fly around looking for possible places to nest. Then he takes mom bluebird around and shows her what he found. Dad bluebird’s job is mostly finished. Mom makes the nest, lays the eggs, feeds the chicks, removes the poop (the chick’s poop comes out wrapped in little bags) Mom also cleans the nest of egg shells. I have seen her eat the pieces of shell.
There is a good chance the bluebirds I am seeing are from last year’s brood.
Mom is busy today. Might have an egg tomorrow!
I bought a ‘sparrow spooker’ that needs to be mounted above the bluebird house after the first egg is laid. It is nothing more than Mylar strips hanging from rods. The strips have to touch the top of the birdhouse. If I put it up before the first egg is laid, the bluebirds might not use the house. But apparently once the first egg is laid, momma bluebird will go in the house.
There are several varieties. This is the one I bought from an Etsy merchant.
Mom doesn’t like the shiny thing.
Could it be the little red light?
Night vision and status light are off. Might be seeing itself in the reflection. First time the v3 got pecked at. Previously it would only get a passing glance.
Ah ok. Yeah, didn’t think of the reflection.
I wouldn’t want a camera indoors either if I lived in a one room house. I have no indoor cameras in my eight room house.
Same here. I’m in a very small house here and no cams inside (except when one is aiming at the floor to trap a mouse).
