Wyze Thermostat C wire adapter issue

Today multiple breakers in my electrical panel tripped and I smelled electrical burn. Both of my HVAC units shut down and the breakers for both air handlers (blower fans) could not be reset. After a lot of trouble shooting I determined that the Wyze C wire adapter had shorted and failed. I did testing to confirm this and removed it and replaced with the original non-smart thermostat and everything is working again.

I wanted to post this just to share the experience because I could not find a lot of information out there. The little information I did find is that these adapters, for all products that use them, are prone to failure. Mine failed at about 6 years.

I am a huge Wyze supporter with many cameras and other devices in my network. I loved my Wyze Thermostat but I don’t think I will install another one because of this experience.

I may eventually run a new thermostat wire so that I don’t need the C adapter eventually. My limitation was not my HVAC wiring, its was simply the thermostat wiring.

I hope this helps someone. Thanks

WOW! Thanks for posting your experience for others to see and learn from. With all the problems I have had with their cameras, there is simply no chance in high heaven I would trust their products for securing my doors or running my HVAC system. Time has proven this to be a wise decision on my part.

Then why are you in the forums and posting if nothing works with them??? I never understand this behavior in forums.

My 26 cameras, 20 lightbulbs, door sensors, water sensors (that saved me), vacuum, door lock, and previously the t-stat. All work or have worked great. Most within the margin of error for any technology. Especially cheap tech.

I do like that OP shared this to show a potential for failure in the component. That may be useful to someone in the future.

Please quote where I said “nothing works”. I said I had a lot of problems. Please do not put words in my mouth.

Thanks and have a great weekend.

Hi again! Sorry, I didn’t mean to cause any drama. I’ve gotten a lot of help from this forum over the years and just thought I would share an unexpected problem and solution to possibly help someone. When both of my HVACs failed I was very worried about the expenses I could be looking at and the Wyze thermostat was the last thing I was thinking of as the cause.

The Wyze adapter short was enough to blow the fuses of both my HVAC blowers apparently because they share the same neutral and they could not be reset until the short was removed from the system. It was a very confusing and concerning half a day until I figured it out. I have many Wyze devices and some are great and some were not so great. I don’t care. Maybe this is why they don’t sell the thermostat anymore?

I support Wyze because they are willing to try new things and bring innovation the market quickly for a reasonable price, this obviously comes with some failures and I am OK with that. I have more than 30 Wyze devices in my network and have setup friends with their products because entry price is low with many benefits overall. I used to use Dlink cameras for years that were far more unreliable. I think all of us have frustrations with their products at times, some are amazing and some terrible, but generally I like that they are willing to take risks on products at reasonable price. Good luck to all!
