Anyone know how to connect a cam v3 if the phone is using 5Ghz. It’s not possible to change the frequency to 2.4 Ghz on a nest router, although both bands are transmitted
The phone is irrelevant. The cam should connect to 2.4 and can be seen on 2.4GHz or 5GHz or OTA.
Or 6GHz🤗
Wish I had it.
Not true, the phone needs to be connected to the same band as the camera in order to initially setup the camera. I think that’s what @derek1 is trying to do.
Never had to before.
I stay on my mesh network (5G) and move/install cams to my IOT (2.4G) network.
Maybe it is an Android feature.
I am prompted to select a network during the process. Why offer that option, if your beliefs are correct?
It is specific to older cams, v3 to be exact. Newer cams such as v4 and OG I beleive they get “help” from bluetooth to connect. They (v3) can only see 2.4Ghz band, so if the phone is on 5Ghz band the camera can’t connect to the phone so the phone can display the QR code for the camera to scan.
In your case, you have two networks, 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz so it is easy for you because you steer everything to your 2.4Ghz network, The OP has a combined network 5/2,4Ghz. With mesh routers such as Google and Eero the 2.4Ghz is sort of hidden. On the Eero you can disable the 5Ghz for something like 5-10 minutes so you can setup 2.4Ghz IoT devices. Not sure if Google mesh has that feature though.
EDIT: You have KASA bulbs I think. Remember when you were setting up you had to connect to the WiFi that the bulb creates in order to setup. That temporary network is 2,4 Ghz only.
I continue to disagree. No issue with v2 or v3 cams.
Works fine for me on my TP-link mesh.
Could be my setup.
Do you see an option to choose a network when installing or moving?
I don’t think I did that. It was so easy, I forgot. Even the newer Wyze bulbs don’t connect to a temp network like the old 2019 bulbs did. I could be mistaken. I set it and forget it.
The phone DOES NOT have to be on the same WiFi band.
I have Wyze Mesh Pro Routers. They combine the bands. Phone is on 5 Ghz but Cameras can connect to 2.4 Ghz.
I never have to switch anything.
Your both right. I had to think on this one for awhile .
Same as @ssummerlin I have never had to put my phone on the 2.4 band. I’ve probably installed or factory reset devices hundreds of times over the past 20 years with a new router every 2 years.
In fact I won’t even allow my phone on the 2.4 band. If I did see a requirement to switch bands I would want to know
WHY?
Thank you @habib, you answered the why. Your seeing this from the viewpoint of a combined network.
Having progressed from the original “g” spec to current “ax” spec I have never seen this. I have always had 2 distinct SSID"s (now 3, Thank you 6e).
FWIW-- I belive my last 2 xfinity routers, XB7 & XB8, during setup, asks if they can take over renaming my network to one SSID. My answer is always no.
Thanks to both of you. I learned something today😊
How about if you have to setup a v3 for the first time?
I have a V3 that I use as a “rover”. It gets a factory reset every one or two weeks. I have never had to switch bands. This includes my 15 wyze cams and bulbs and my 20 kasa plugs and light switches.
What I do find interesting is not only does Wyze suggest being on the same band but so does Kasa and a few nonames on my network. I think it comes down to your suggestion that a combined network (one SSID) may be the culprit.
It does. When I got my first Wyze cameras back in the day I had two band network and I had to make sure that my phone is connected to 2.4GHz band. On my new combined single SSID network I have to suspend 5Ghz temporary as my phone stays glued to the 5GHz band.
I haven’t done one in awhile but I can test and do one.
No, but if your phone is on 5GHz band the camera at setup can’t see it. As I said earlier, you don’t have the issue because you do have two separate networks and SSIDs.
Guess I need to see it to believe it. I am quite sure I did not have an issue with one combined SSD before I moved to mesh.
Just like my wife, you like to argue don’t you?
Reporting back… I just deleted a v3 I had… and re-added the v3 on Wyze Pro Mesh WiFi. It added back in and is working just fine.
Keep in mind, I’m using the cursed app version 3.2.5(591) on Android so… all bets are off for what is normal in this version. There are a lot of Poltergeist level ghosts in this version.
But, I was able to add the v3 camera back.
Interesting, did you have to scan the QR code?
