No you do not need a card for CP Lite recording. I just use the cards to record events beyond the 12 seconds cloud video. I still get the 12 second cloud clips also.

Yes on motion detection. I have 32GB cards in my cameras all set for scheduled event recording, motion only, set for 30 days, no cooldown period, max video length per event set at 2 minutes, max is five min. The cams will record up to the time set like my 2 min. as long as motion continues. The files can be downloaded from the camera album. Also get the 12 sec. cloud event video. Below is a sample video from scheduled event recording.
