Wyze Cam on a Birdfeeder

The first Hairy Woodpecker to my feeder. I think its a Hairy anyway, as the Downy has a shorter bill according to Merlin.

Definitely a male Hairy. Beak length and you can clearly see the shoulder comma:

Wouldn’t you know it, the female Hairy stopped by the feeder to check things out as well. I am glad they are checking things out and hope more and more species continue to find my feeder.

That’s a female Downy.

Thanks for letting me know. I made a couple of adjustments and within an hour this House Finch showed up.

Pretty! :+1:

Are you shooting your videos with a WCO? Sound clarity is great!

Thank you, this has been fun and I wish I had started years ago, More birds would also be great. Clearly the feeder has been found, but it hasn’t turned into the all day diner with limited seating that I’ve been hoping for. It’s only been about a month, so hopefully with more time the activity will pick up.

I started with a WCO, but then swapped to a v3 in relatively short order. My two v1 WCOs are now back in the closet collecting dust. I decided to reach out to the OP and asked if they would be willing to update the title of this thread by simply dropping the word ā€œOutdoorā€. If they rather not, no biggie and I’ll likely start my own thread.

So I’ve made a couple adjustments to my cam - first, I have a second shepherd’s hook in the backyard that I have the backyard cam set up on - so now the footage is clear.

Also, I set up my second cam on a second hummingbird feeder in the front yard. Same sort of setup, I have a second shepherd’s hook with the cam on it.

Now I await. No hummingbirds yet, but Spring Migration is still going on - most of the hummers are still working their way up towards PA from the south. I’ve got detection zones set up, sensitivity (hopefully) set up right - jacked most of the way up. So far I’ve gotten alerts due to wind - but none for the tiny flyers just yet. I’m hoping within the week (I’d prefer today/yesterday/RIGHT NOW) to see/catch one. I’ve got a couple other feeders that aren’t shown on the cams that I’m making visual checks on, but these are the big ones.

What’s the distance of the camera from the feeders? Thanks.

Both of them are about a foot-ish (or so) away.

A house finch spent a lot of time at my feeder today. Of course one of the Chickadees that keep a close on the feeder made a cameo as well.

This Chickadee puts on a show for the camera.

I swear the Chickadees try to scare other birds away and off of the feeder. Based on my reading, they are super friendly birds and not territorial unless taking care of little ones. With that said, the feeder can sit empty for hours. As soon as another bird shows up they will land on the feeder, grab a seed, and take off. Anyway, in this clip they are going back and forth already when a Goldfinch shows up.

Edit:
Well so much for not being territorial.

Have you tried an upside down thistle feeder for your Goldfinches? You’ll get stomach ache from laughing all day watching the non-Goldfinches try figure it out.

Link for reference only… I bought this Perky-Pet feeder initially, but it didn’t last long, has no torrential rain protection and needs a big dome squirrel deflector. But it’s a great low cost starter. Ended up buying a custom feeder from a local artisan at the local bird feed store.

Thanks for the tip and I’ll take it under consideration. I’m stating with another new hobby as well, so probably won’t add another feeder just yet. My new DJI mini se drone with all sorts of other goodies should be here Thursday.

Sweet! I was hoping Wyze would have a drone out by now. I’ll probably get a DJI later this year. Keep the prop guards on… no chewing up your feathered friends.

That’s neat. I put it on my wish list. I may devise a hood for it to keep rain off. For some reason squirrels don’t come to my feeders. They seem to prefer all the acorns on the ground.

I just picked up a big bird feeder dome from Home Depot for mine. If you get the Perky-Pet feeder and live in an area that receives rain with wind (sideways rain), only fill the feeder halfway. Rain drops get into the feeder holes and thistle molds quickly. And thistle is relatively expensive to dump out.

My feeders are under a big tree and don’t get much rain on them. but I would definitely put a dome on it.

Things got a bit heated in the neighborhood this morning. Watch closely at the beginning. You will see a Goldfinch and House Finch get into it briefly. The House Finches then hop to the feeder, but not without a Chickadee reminding them that they feed here too. The female House Finch is not trusting the camera setup one bit. She’s more interested in keeping an eye on that than eating.
