Out of curiosity…are your cams still connecting? I have eeros as well and it was great until 01/11/24. All my cameras went offline at the same time and none of my cameras can find the network now. I ordered 2 new cameras because mine are pretty old, but brand new cameras can’t find the network either.
My Asus routers are still running fine. This past Wednesday it was slow to connect to my cameras, but they did connect. Incidentally on the same day I lost my Disney Plus connection, which later recovered. For now I blame AWS.
Yes they all work fine with the app. I saw in the Facebook group there was another outage a couple days ago for some people, maybe that impacted you? They should be ok now after a reset of the network and cameras.
I would recommend the unifi dream machine router, very insightful, advanced config, ability to had extra access points. Security features built in (IPS\IDS, DPI, ad blocker, secure DNS, region blocker, app blocker).
I have to agree with @ColoradoFrench First, it does not matter what wifi router you have if you are surrounded by neighbors with routers configured that overlap your channel. 2.4ghz is so congested and affected by weather.
My solution is similar to @ColoradoFrench i went a little overboard but i have 8 AP’s with a wired backhaul. Depending on the time of day and/congestion, each AP will check for the strongest and fastest 2.4 ghz band and change to it and will steer my cameras and wifi devices to the best AP.
Another important thiing is how many connections / streams your router can handle. The cams don’t use that much but again, it all depends on how many your router can deal with. TIP: Periodically have your cams reboot to re-establish a strong link to the router if you’re running a simple setup.
My Opinion ASUS
I currently use an RT-AX86U
Whatever you choose you may want to pay attention to the WiFi Generation.
Good Luck!
Asus is a good brand. Which model do you have? Their routers usually allows a lot of configuration options. If you have a single system, check to see if it has beam-forming.
What did you mean by WiFi Generation? Do you mean having the latest like Wifi 7? The reason i ask is because it would have nothing to do with the the 2.4ghz band which most camera’s and IoT devices operate on due to the longer range for the wavelength.
What would really be nice is if Wyze added a POE network connection to their cameras so it can be used either wired or wireless.
I currently use an RT-AX86U
Yes. YMMV at this point in time with device support for the latest generation. 2.4 is required for the cameras but I doubt you could find a router without that included.
Very nice router. OFDMA with Beamforming. Did you use your Guest WiFi as the IoT channel for your various 2.4ghz devices? If you didn’t, you should consider it as it will isolate access to your local network. Just another layer of security as some overseas chipsets are questionable; not all, just some.
Oh, and Welcome to the Wyze Forums! Cheers!
I know I am late into this topic but I am a new adopter of the wyze cameras and am indeed having issues which I believe are tied to my modem/router. I have posted a request for info elsewhere on the site but this may be the right place to ask I currently have a Bell Whole Home 1000 Modem/Router. All seemed fine when I hade one Battery Cam Pro but when I added my V3 and then another BCP I started getting failure to connect, loss of video due to buffering etc… My question - If I get a Wyze Mesh Router and plug it into the Whole Home 1000 router using an ethernet cable, would that replace the router features in my existing router/modem combination and provide better camera and computer connections ? I ultimately would like to connect 5 cameras, two lap tops, and my cell phone to the wi-fi network in my home.
Yes you can plug it in to replace the router features. But first you will need to enable bridge mode in your existing combo modem/router. You may need to call support to do this for you.
Will it offer better performance for you? This I cannot answer as this is dependent on many factors, but it should if the specifications are better then your current ones.
Good luck
As @xeleena stated, you can plug it into the current Modem/Router but would need to turn on Bridge Mode. However, if you would rather eliminate your equipment, you could get a Modem to hook up to your Provider and then attach the Wyze Router to that. This will allow you to deal with one router and settings.
With all of this, the performance of any router is dependent on a lot of external factors such as interference like walls, distance you wish to cover. In addition, it depends on your internet upload and download speeds and if your provider limits bandwidth.
Now to answer your basic question, the Wyze Mesh Router Pro has worked flawlessly for me and I find it to function extremely well with the Wyze products as well. I have been through many routers and have had success with ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 and the Wyze Mesh Router and Mesh Router Pro. If I were looking to replace, I would seriously consider a Tri-Band Router like the Wyze Router Pro, I tend to see better performance with Tri-Band Routers. Note: The ASUS is Tri-Band as well.
Thanks for the replies - I do have a very strong signal to any location where I plan on installing my cameras. The furthest one is about 40 feet away from my current Hub. When I activate the V3 cam it shows the video speed on the screen and it bounces between 77 and 136 kbps. My Internet speeds are 25 down and 10 up mbps. I just found that when I turned the V3 camera on then my two BCP cameras start to have problems communicating and drop connection quite often. They also start to have issues connecting to the Cam+ account…
Based on your responses it truly sounds like I will need to take the next step and get a router from wyze I am sure I will be able to find a document on the Hub 1000 for info on how to bridge it !
Thanks to all…
I didn’t get enough info presented to definitely determine you need a new modem/router. There could be other issues affecting performance.
I’m running a TP Link Deco XE75 3 node mesh connected to a Motorola MT7711 voice modem/router. Bridging was not a requirement in the setup. My system is functioning without issues. I did create a new main mesh network and also cloned the existing network for my LoT smart devices to a dedicated 2.4 network in the mesh. 26 various Wyze cams and 35+ smart plugs, lights and Amazon echo units. All operating at full signal strength. The dedicated LoT network sold me on the Deco XE75 plus the ease of the setup.
The main point I wanted to make concerns bridging. If you go with a single unit Wyze router with your existing modem/router, you will want to bridge. I would suggest at least a 2 unit mesh system regardless of brand. Connect to an ethernet port on your existing router, complete the setup and let the mesh system take control of your networking.
Let me know if I can further assist you.
Additional thoughts. The BCP’s are 5g cams. I also have 2 of them. Your Bell is a 2.4g modem/router and there maybe some communication conflicts. They are assigned to the 5g band in my XE75 and run very smoothly. No issues with cam+ and I am getting smart detection and person detection notifications on my phone and echo devices.
What happens when you connect only the v3’s versus connecting only the BCP’s. It seems like the conflicts are popping up when you mix 2.4g and 5g cams in your 2.4g network. I would have waited on the BCP’s until I had a dual or tri-band band router or mesh since they are optimized for 5g.
Your connection requirements are minimal and should be easily accommodated in a dual or tri-band network system. Keep updating your post as you work through a solution.
Thanks - I did order a new Wyze Mesh Router which I assume wil arrive early this week. I will certainly update the discussion when I install it. As a side note - today my two Battery Cam Pros were working great (along with my lap top and cell phone on wifi. I turned on my V3 and it was working nice - providing me a nice view and then I lost contact with the two BCP’s as well as my V3 and then lost wifi connection on my cell phone. I restartwd my wyze app, turned off the V3 camera, and reconnected my lap top wifi link and now everything is working again Does indeed look more and more like the wifi router is the issue. I also found a document on how to bridge a router to the Home Hub 1000 so it really looks like you and the others in the forum have put me on the right track
Great to hear and thanks fir the quick update. Did you order a single router unit or 2 to create a mesh network? You will want to enable bridging in your Bell 1000 and let the Wyze unit become your primary router. There are some settings in the Bell you may need to copy to the Wyze. There are some good articles on bridging on the internet.
Good luck with your next steps.
Thanks - I only plan on 5 cameras as it is a small home so I figured one new router would do the job. As it is right now, i see strong signal on each camera when I look at the device in the app. I will update when I have the unit running and have all the cameras connected
Well - Here we are … The new router showed up. I have to send kudos to the staff at Wyze Canada for their quick shipping. I placed the order two days ago, and the unit showed up in the mail today !
Now for the fun part. I had prepared myself for the change out by taking copious notes on the original settings for my ISP and the Modem/Router. I went to the mall and upgraded my cell phone plan to include data so I could do the programming and receive event notifications when I am away from the home.
First step was to turn off the wifi in the Home Hub 1000 and then place it in bridge mode. That was actually a fairly simple process. Then I followed the set-up directions I had downloaded before starting. I did have to bounce around in some of the screens to find where to input my PPoE info but after doing it the router came to life. I was surprised that I had to enter my password to connect my laptop and could not see any of the other devices come on line. It took a while before I realized I had a space in my SSID where I should not have so I had to do a factory re-set and start over. Got it right and all is well. Every device and camera connected beautifully. YAY !!!
Thanks to all who provided advice through my travels into this new world of wifi and cameras !!!
Success is always good news to hear. Hopefully, all will be the same in the near and distant future. Best of luck with your new setup.
