Using my sensors in my mailbox with my camera inside

I’m having issues with triggering a response from my sensors (I’ve tried both motion and contact) when I’ve put them in my mailbox. I’m creating a routine with my echo and leds for notifications. I’ve moved my camera to the window right inside from my mailbox but it won’t trigger the notification. (It works inside my house) Is there a way to extend the range? Does it use Bluetooth? I’m probably 15-20’ away from the mailbox. Any help is appreciated.

Hi @helton5307 and welcome to the community!

The devices use WiFi ch 11. There is another thread on this issue. Click the link below:

Is it a metal mail box that you have ?

If so, I just straightened and extended a contact sensor antenna and place it on the outside of the box near the door.
Used Scotch Mounting Putty - (removable and reusable) to waterproof it competently.
Been out there for about a year with no problems.
This mod increased the range and signal strengthen by 0 to 2 bars.
When it opens Alexa says … You’ve Got Mail.

Thank you so much. Currently I get 1-2 bars with no modifications. I would think it would work. I have it programmed to turn on a light and change it to green. I don’t think I’ll hear it if I’m not there or asleep. (Work night shift) If you have any other thoughts I will always appreciate them. I have a motion sensor in there at the moment.

Hum …

What is delayed the notification on your phone or the Alexa routine to turn the light on ?

The mod should increase your 2 bar to 3 bars…

No delay. No response. The should come on and stay on. I’ll play with it this weekend. Thank you.

Hello People.

I have modified my latest contact sensors by making their magnetic reed switches external rather than their antennas. The external switch modification requires some entry level fabrication skills.
From the user’s view, the finished modifications are not apparent, and the batterys are readily changed.
To view one of these modifications see:
Thinking outside the metal (steel) maillbox - 2
Another application of the external switch can be seen at:

Both modifications have been working for well over a year.
