i have a question about the actual size of the bulb cam to fit in the actual garage light fixture like they have pictured in the advertisement. i am trying to buy fixtures and want to make sure the Bulbcam will sit just below the bottom, like in the picture and I can’t find the actual measurements of the bulbcam from top to bottom with the extender

In addition to what @dave27 noted, you can check the Help Center for more detail. The “What are the dimensions of Wyze Bulb Cam and Accessory Bulb?” article has some more information and links to a couple of related articles. Wyze advises that a sconce should be ≤~8″ in interior height for the Bulb Cam to fit with an unobscured view. One of the sconces I’m using is right at 8″, and I like the way Bulb Cam has worked in that, giving me a good view outside the garage.
The FAQs say no more than 7.87” from “socket base to sconce edge”. Of course what are they considering the socket base? The metal tab that will electrocute you if you put a tape measure in it, or the end of the ceramic part which is what the picture I posted shows? I’m guessing the ceramic part as shown above.
Of course being a fraction of an inch over probably only matters if you have the cam aimed straight out, you might see a bit of the light fixture or have some reflection for the IR lights at night. I’m guessing when angled down you can go a bit further, depending on the angle.
Worst case, you can get socket extenders cheap, though I wouldn’t recommend using more than one, there are varying lengths out there that will add an inch or more.
Yes, because Wyze is imprecise about exactly what points they’re measuring between and because I’ve seen the ~8″ guidance elsewhere, I think that’s a fair approximation to use. I imagine most of these will be installed with the screw base oriented at the top and with the Cam’s view angled/tilted somewhere downward from horizontal, so I think that helps some with clearance from the fixture, and the way the Cam body tilts it’s got a small hood/lip/bill that I think is intended to reduce glare from the lighting element above. I haven’t noticed any IR reflection when I’ve tried using that.
I think a socket extender is a reasonable idea for a sconce that exceeds that ~8″ height. ![]()
If someone is installing one of these right side up outside, then their light fixture is installed upside down ![]()
I suppose you could put it in a really large coach house style light but it would be looking through the glass which would probably stink, especially around the bevels and metal frame etc.
I can only imagine someone installing a sconce upside down and putting this in it, with everything filling with water. Anyone reading this, please don’t do that.
But yeah, I’d assume the vast majority of these are installed cam down. Does it even have the 180 degree rotation option in the app? I guess indoors it might be useful, although quite ugly.
Some people have reported using these in lamps or other settings where the socket is open at the top, but I wouldn’t expect too many of these to be outdoors.
Yup.
Yup, especially with that anti-glare lip on the bottom in that situation, because it’s not possible to “tilt” the Cam past vertical to get it ~180° to the other side (if that makes sense), so with a Cam-on-top orientation that lip has to be on the bottom (unless you break the pivot).
