People now seem to be locking in on Wyze being a security company because they sell Wyze Lock. And part of the the marketing material is “Built with Lockin. Built for Security.”
Lockin is a third party vendor that Wyze has purchased their deadbolt turner from. They have simply copied the marketing material. Not the first time a marketing department has oversold the capabilities of a product. In fact, Lockin has actually since removed that tagline from their website altogether.
The Wyze “door lock” is simply an IoT gadget that allows you to remotely open and close the existing deadbolt over the internet. The actual security is done by the deadbolt which is manufactured by someone else.
In fact, on the page that covers the lock that Wyze has purchased, the only mention of security is in relation to AES 128 bit encryption, hardware encryption, zigbee and bluetooth protocols and 2fA. No mention whatsoever of home security at all.
The other product they sell has an intruder alarm as well as the ability to call for help. These are at least somewhat security features. No doubt that the branding/marketing has just spanned the whole suite without worrying about individual accuracy or relevance.
Calling Wyze a security company for turning a deadbolt closed is like calling anyone in your house a security guard when they manually lock the deadbolt after leaving the house.
As someone else said, “I’ve never had a security system, but every place I’ve lived has had a lock. They’re just not the same thing.”
Being able to open it with an app doesn’t change that; it may just make it less secure actually.
