Running cable outside on brick wall

My bad, three birds

Are you trying to add more birds to the equation?

I just finished running power for my backyard camera. I ended up using Gorilla Max Strength Construction on the bricks.

Came out pretty well. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Looks very nice and clean.

I would still get a cover for your outdoor outlet something like this. The WYZE power adapter that came with the camera is for indoor use only. It would be safer in a covered box. I have two cams plugged into a covered vertical box that will fit two smart plugs and the power adapters plugged in an outdoor GFCI. Easy to install.

 This for sure, which I agreed with when I believe @grapefruityoda was suggesting the same thing earlier in this topic, especially since you’ve chosen not to use the Outdoor Power Adapter. Then again, I live in an area where it sometimes rains sideways because of the wind, so even a cover on a porch is no guarantee that things will remain dry. The work so far is definitely tidy, though! :+1:

Thanks! Good idea, I will consider this. I should have posted a picture of the area that shows the plug is in a covered area; even sideways rain would not hit the plug, plus I have a shelving unit in front of it. I will take a picture tomorrow in the daylight.

Looking at the outdoor power adapter, I don’t think it is long enough to reach the camera and the outlet :frowning:

I took a few pictures of the area where my electrical outlet is on the back porch. As you can see, there is quite a bit of overhang and covering. But I am starting to lean toward getting the Outdoor Power Adapter.

The outlet is behind the rolling sheves

I think I would for anything more than a temporary camera placement in good weather, at least where the power outlet is outdoors. If you do, then I hope the work you’ve already done won’t be a problem.

I just ordered one on Amazon. TayMac MM410C
I plan to install it this weekend.

Have used a bunch of those, they work well, can be either horizontal or vertical mounted by just moving a plastic pin from one hinge to the other (at least the ones I have that look identical are that way). Home Depot around here stopped carrying the TayMac line in favor of regular Hubbell (same company) so I bought a couple cases of them on clearance a couple years ago.

It isn’t one I’d use in constant direct rain since it doesn’t seal quite as tight as some others I’ve used but for your use case should be more than enough (and bring you up to code too). I’m assuming your outlet or breaker is GFCI if all else fails?

Honestly if it will be in the sun (or even below freezing in the winter) it will get quite hot inside the cover, and these Wyze adapters are known to be sort of wimpy. At some point may want to grab a better quality (and likely smaller size) one from someone like Anker or similar. I’ve actually used a couple of these Amazon Basics one for a family member, they’ve been outside year round for 18 months now, sealed in a weatherproof box in both summer heat and winter cold without issues. They were on sale for like $5 for the 2 pack at that point, the current $10 is a tad steep.

Yes, they are GFCIs. It won’t be in constant direct rain, maybe slight splashes or drops if a storm gets real bad, but that area is pretty well covered.

It shouldn’t get direct sun. I live in Dallas, TX and it can get hot. In fact I have an older cam v3 in the garage, and it get sweltering in there during a hot Texas (110 deg) summer. I will take a look at those adapters. You can never have enough USB adapters LOL. Are those adapters shorter than the Wyze ones? I guess they should fit in under the closed cover?

Thanks for the response!

I just ordered a pair. I like that they are single USB A jack. Since you are using them I assume the fit fine in the box. Thanks for the tip!

I’ve been using these for over two years in direct sunlight and freezing Canadian winters, they power two cameras at the time. Haven’t had any issues so far.

I would have recommended using conduit on the wiring. Too exposed and accessible and subject to being easily cut/vandalized. I have siding and use flat cables thru windows to inside outlets for power. A couple fully outside have cables tucked underneath siding and channeled down end caps to gfci’s outlets in the weatherproof box covers. I have never had a need for use of the outside adapters with my installations. I also recommend the use of a 90⁰ usb connector for the power adapter inside the weatherproof box. FYI: The 2nd outlet is wired thru the main gfci for gfci control. Easy diy installs and testing. Probably could have more easily installed gfci breakers but they are not dedicated to the outside outlets.

Looks great! I like how you hid the cable from the camera down to the electrical box, unfortunately I have brick walls, but I am happy with my setup especially for my back yard that is fenced in and not to concerned with someone cutting the wires. I was just looking at one of those cam v3 pan cameras. I may get one of those for the back of my house. These Wyze cameras are pretty nice. Hopefully they will come out with a cam v4 pan that is 2.5K. That extra resolution is nice. Is that an L adapter? Where did you get that?

As someone with self-diagnosed mild OCPD, I like it!

I actually haven’t used them with the TayMac covers (they’re in a different type of outdoor box with a screw on cover and gasket, totally sealed). I’m not positive if they’ll fit, they’re a bit long and the USB comes out the end where the cover will close. Might need a right angle USB plug (or an adapter like @fmills1d shows in one pic) or even right angle AC plug adapter or short extension cord. Sorry if I implied they’d definitely work with that particular cover, was sort of two different trains of thought. It might work fine, just haven’t tried that particular combo.

If memory serves right, it is either about the same depth as the stock Wyze plug or a tad shorter.

The 90⁰ L connector is from Amazon. A 2for pack that was in the $5 - $7 range.
