Paintball-blasting home security camera redefines 'enter at own risk'

Excellent idea. I would like to deter unwanted iguanas in the backyard. Other animals would be allowed access. (I wonder if tear gas would be considered animal abuse?)

You should be putting lifeboats or :ring_buoy: in your pool for the iguanas who dive in from the trees.

Ha. They are good swimmers but they canā€™t drive lifeboats.

They are referred to as ā€œChicken of the treesā€ but I have no desire to eat one.

@AnnWithAPlan needs one that shoots water for her kitty visitor.

Out of curiosity I signed up to be notified when they are available.

With the Kickstarter discount the camera is cough cough $1629.00 :flushed:

Kitty canā€™t get up onto the table or the birdbath anymore. But it still would be nice, haha.

Not to be a buzzkill, but just be careful. Technically indiscriminate automated ā€œbooby trapsā€ even if ā€œnon-lethalā€ have repeatedly been ruled by courts to violate the law even when they are inflicted upon actual trespassers where it wouldā€™ve otherwise been legal for a home owner to harm them if they had used their own personal discretion to do so themselves. Burglars that got harmed by indiscriminate booby traps have been able to sue home owners for violating the indiscriminate nature of the harm and win millions against them even though they were the criminal who invaded illegally and the homeowner wouldā€™ve been allowed to harm the person themselves.

The courts rule that protection must be able to allow someone like law enforcement, first responders, etc. to enter unharmed. If the device cannot tell the difference for this, then it is technically illegal, even if it only attacks someone the home owner could legitimately attack in other circumstances.

In other words, to make this legal, what they need to do is have it send a notification to the owner and let the owner manually press an ā€œattackā€ command after determining that the person at the door is not law enforcement, or a first responder, or someone who is going to harm their property, the owner or their family. If it fires on someone who isnā€™t going to harm their property, or someone in their household, the law would likely side with whomever was shot. At least, thatā€™s how all previous court cases have goneā€¦such things require nuanced human discretion in each case or they are automatically illegalā€¦at least in the USA.

IANAL, just saying, consider consulting a lawyer before having any automated deterrent attack someone, even non-lethally. It may still be considered unlawful assault with a weapon, or worse depending on the jurisdiction.

Having said all that, I think this camera is AWESOME! I may even get one. But I would not have it make decisions for who to shoot or notā€¦I would only allow it to shoot if I tell it to do so specifically for the person detected and then that it should fire. Hopefully they implement posting a notification that has both a fire & a stand-down button on it.

I believe I saw that option in the demo video. As long as it does not put an eye out, can a invader sue because paint ruined his outfit? I think bullets would cause more harm. Also, tear gas wears off.

There are probably nuances in different jurisdictions, for which I cannot legally provide correct legal advice (IANAL), however, in general terms it is my understanding that any harm caused by indiscriminate or even negligent conditions would make us liable, and I believe the makers of this product indicated that it is designed to ā€œhurt enoughā€¦ā€ which would be easy to qualify in a courtroom as causing some ā€œharmā€ (hurt) even if it was NOT injurious or lethal. Bruises also generally count as injury. Damage to their property (clothes), probably also counts as a kind of injury. Particularly if they havenā€™t actually harmed you or your property yet. Again, this is all based on AUTOMATIC And indiscriminate booby trapsā€¦itā€™s possibly a whole different legal story if you approve and activate it yourself in a situation that would warrant it.

Again, donā€™t shoot the messenger :joy: Iā€™m not saying how things should or shouldnā€™t be, just sharing the way things have often gone in the court rulings as a matter of fact (I did work as a legal assistant in a law firm some years agoā€¦but I was/am not a lawyer myself and canā€™t give legal advice). A local attorney would be the one to ask if anyone buys one of these. Iā€™m just giving info to consider in case anyone is interested in it. As I said, I might even get one or 2 myself depending on the price and full feature set.

I would probably go for the tear gas pellets. Leaves no marks.

On the contrary, they do leave visible physical damage (including residue that may still ruin their clothes if you were hoping to avoid that), and they are actually the more risky option of the 2. They can become a serious health hazard and would be much easier to sue over. Sometimes they even cause long-term internal damage. In some cases it can be lethal, particularly if it hits someone with a compromised respiratory system, which youā€™d never be able to tell by looking at them, but could turn a simple civil case into a potential negligent homicide case, that, even if you are found not guilty, could financially destitute you. :scream:

Again, you would save yourself a lot of headache just by making sure it is not fully automated and requires your consent to start targeting anyone that you couldā€™ve legally targeted yourself in the same situation.

Chances are Iā€™d get one of these and it would most likely get use as I tell it to shoot my brothers while they are leaving a family gathering or before or after using my swimming pool, then save the recording for years to come and show all their kids.

Maybe even put it at my swimming pool and tell them to go off the diving board or get shot  Maybe see how good it is at shooting someone going down the slide. I wonder if it can target people in a swimming pool? Make everyone wear goggles and see how long you can go without getting shot. Last one shot wins (ie: who can hold their breath the longest or swim to a new location to come up for breath and go back down before it adjusts and shoots you. (Must sign a waiver in advance). That would be a fun game.

Hey @bryonhu gives good thread. Who knew?

@bryonhu is my friend and good buddy. Weā€™re growing old together. Maybe a little faster because of Wyze.

Agreed. That would be fun to watch.

Someone rigged up a shotgun to their front door because of repeated burglaries. Owner got prison time because the perp got shot on the front porch rather than in the house. A matter of a door and a few feet made the difference.

Itā€™s so easy to hose-down the porch but I hate getting blood out of the carpet. Maybe I should change to tile.
