Need your feedback before we start work on RTSP!

I used to have those cameras. Each camera has its own URL. Very convenient and it works locally even when the internet is out. Maybe I should looking for them again.

I had a few WYZE V.2s that I used RTSP for the "tinyCAM’ App on a Samsung TV or FireStick…
Seemed to work OK… I was excited when the V.4s came out… I pickup (8) and got them installed at my home along with another (4) at my parents, as they are getting old… It wasn’t until I got them all installed that I learned that they did NOT support RTSP. (Doh!) I used them for a few months but came to the conclusion that not having RSTP support was simply a deal breaker…

I replaced them all with TP-Link C121’s and although they are not quite as compact, they work about the same, Only they support RTSP of course… So I have 10-12 V.4s sitting in a drawer until Wyze decides to start supporting RTSP…

About the only feature the WYZE has over the C121 (and I assume other TP-Link cameras DO NOT!) is the STATUS LED functionality. The TP-Links LED Status tells you the camera is ON if enabled, but the WYZE LED Status changes from Blue(ON) to RED(when being accessed). Helps you know when someone if looking at the camera… This is something I MISS from the the V.4 behavior…

If WYZE plans to add RSTP support, I would pull all the TP-Links down and revert back to the V.4s again…

I suspect you underestimate the number of lurker power users. Make this work and they will come.

I can’t speak to the reddit thread, but you guys might have also noticed the Docker Wyze Bridge (HA add-on) thread on github. I have 18 wyze cams of many different generations and was one of the lucky for who the temporary work around using host mode work-ish (not very stable but as long as it’s a temporary bandaid, I can make do).
Many users on this thread were not as lucky and could not get the host mode fix to work for their setup. And in those, the most common “fix” from various users was… get a different brand. This breaks my heart, I have been purchasing wyze since its origin cam V1, and have since purchased nearly all smart home product families (lock, doorbell, sensors, light bulbs, plugs, scale, watch, subscription to cam unlimited and home monitoring…).
I seriously don’t understand why we need to rely on others to integrate anything from Wyze in Home Assistant generally speaking, being DWB add-on for cameras, or the Wyze home assistant integration created by another user. Opening RTSP is certainly a must that would be appreciated by a lot of users including me, but ideally this would be a first step to getting an official HA integration for all Wyze devices.

I don’t (yet) even use Home Assistant, and I like this. Well said. :+1:

@Nerdy dropping facts!

I relate to much of what you wrote.

I also hope that step 2 will be exploring Home Assistant support. I don’t think Wyze realizes how big of a deal that could be for getting back their widespread grassroots viral support and enthusiasm like they had when they launched in the early days.

Dave, you could market this as a huge new feature for integrators and people who implement home style security systems - especially the ability to record locally as much as you want, where the footage is on prem and yours.

Plus, it seems like HomeKit integration would be within arm’s length with a non-beta RTSP firmware. Wyze could stand out in their cost bracket as the only HomeKit compatible cameras.

I believe they are waiting for matter for most home integrations. Home kit.has some huge limitations too like 1080p stream and recording max. Someday matter will finish their camera spec for vendor implementation and we can get all the platforms at once

This is my way of saying, RSTP will take care of the bulk of the current incompatability with HomeKit requirements. The rest are easily handled.

I don’t see 1080p being a huge limitation – Wyze cams already offer 360p, 1080p, and higher if your camera supports it. No problem with 1080p – Wyze already can do this.

My fault I meant in the other direction. The v4s are 2.5k which homekit does not support so your locked at 1080 max when connected. Nothing wyze can fix obviously but would discourage me from committing resources. I’d love RTSP for home assistant

People still wanting this? I gave up and bought a $20 camera from Tapo and had it operational faster than it takes for some people to complain about it on a forum post.

Seriously, why beg so hard for something you can get elsewhere for cheap?

Exactly this. Instead of begging for Wyze to get it together it was easier and faster to get a Tapo. Plus there’s freely available 3d printer files for a window mount, and my local library printed it for free.

It’s more of a hope than a beg for me. Im well aware as is wyze and other users that you can find this on a cheap competitor and in some cases I’m using it for that purpose. For me It still wish to be on a unified platform someday.

I don’t have high needs but when I found DWB and Scrypted to get HKSV, I did see some added value for using my wyze cams. For me, its simply having all devices in homekit, everything in one app - that was what made me enjoy the small bit of automation we had setup. The recent snafu kind of ruined that and I see too many alternatives to put my faith in wyze.

Since Home Assistant integrations for Reolink and Tapo cameras have their sensors for on-board person / vehicle / animal / etc built in, I am able to use these to create my own notifications.

What you see here is my own home-made notification that takes a screenshot, stores it on my NAS, and throws it up as a notification to all of my devices. Oh, and did I mention, that when this happens, I take screenshots on every camera in that area (including wyze cameras using docker-wyze-bridge), and also store them on the NAS? Now I can pull up this directory on my computer or phone and quickly pipe through all the photos instead of wasting time scrolling through SD card footage.

Wyze, please get on this level. Your devices are capable of on-board AI detection, add it to Home Assistant already.

Does it have to be implemented per device or per sku of firmware (how certain devices use a different UI, etc?). If so - can you share what devices are selected first?
