Change WiFi Network Name (SSID) and password without device reset

That’s just the default. You can change it to whatever you want. The reason for printing the default like that is that in most of the world, you are not allowed to have the same default for every device. Each router MUST have a different default password (no more admin/admin). So with each device having a different default password, you have to do something to tell the end user what the default password is. Anyone who leaves a network security device with the default password is an ID10T.

Yep, that’s the rub. What you really need to do is be able to set the new SSID/Password into each device as a secondary setting. That way the device can still connect via the old setting until all devices have been updated and then the access point credentials are changed (or the device replaced). Once all devices are working with the new SSID/Password, the old credentials can (and should) be removed. Note that this MUST be done while the old SSID/Password is still operational.

Seems like a simple question generated a bunch of non-sense. It was a simple question. Now I’m getting emails talking about banks and routers changing password. At the end, setting up a Camera requires the same App that could edit the SSID of existing connected camera. I don’t see what is the issue. But, again, I could be wrong.
Really hate that I asked at this moment.

But the problem is that ISP make it either impossible or hard to do change the ssid. Looking at you Spectrum. That’s why for most people, the printed credential is what stays.

Read my last reply. You have to have the old SSID/Password still active in order to communicate the new SSID/Password to it. If the Old SSID/Password is not active there is no way to communicate the new SSID/Password to the camera via the app - period. Assuming the old SSID/Password is still active, you could send a new SSID/Password, but then the camera would lose connectivity to the access point that is still using the old SSID/Password until the access point is changed or replaced. The only way around that is to either have both the old SSID/Password and the new SSID/Password active at the same time during the transition. Or to have the cameras store both the old and new SSID/Passwords.
All of that IS possible, but it’s not quite as simple as many people seem to think it is. And as stated, the old SSID/Password MUST be still operational or this whole discussion is moot.

Really? I have never used an ISP router/access point.

Try going into a residentail area and open up your phone’s WiFi selector. You’ll see “SpectrumSetup-xxx”. Those are the default Spewctrum ssid’s.

I do have both SSIDs working and on same subnet. I’d not lose connection by changing. But I don’t see in app any way to change SSID in a camera.

As explained by K6CCC, it’s much more than just “filling in the blanks”. Much more involved than you can imagine, and it’s due to the nature of the hardware. I have also posted somewhere a similar solution and it seems Wyze is ignoring these solutions. Why? Probably not enough manpower.

I had new Spectrum installed last October. I am using my own SSID and password.

How did I do it? I have no idea. But, I can tell you that if it wasn’t easy, I would remember.

Therefore, it was VERY easy to change the SSID in my Spectrum modem.

I’m not doubting that. There’s a process to do it.

Take my daughter. She’s a civil engineer and internet conversant. Go to her house and the Spectrum ssid is the generic one. If she’s not doing, what’s more can you expect from the others?

But the proof is simple. Around my area, I can see all those “SpectrumSetup-xxx” ssids.

And it looks like you have to wait a certain number of weeks(?) before they allow you to change. And people don’t follow up.

There needs to be a way to reconfigure Wifi from within the app.

There is no reason I should have to completely reset my devices when I change my wifi name or password, if I’m leaving my current Wifi on until I get things moved over to the new one. The app talks to the devices all the time. There should be a location under Advanced Settings (or wherever) that let’s me input new wifi information. When I do that, it should use the current info to talk to the device, push in the new settings, and then wait for the device to come back online.

Only when this fails should I have to manually go walk up to every device and go through the reset process. I have cameras, and other devices, all over my house and it is very inconvenient to have to go through the rest, QR Code, Name, etc process any time I change something.

Please make this a better experience.

This keeps the cams cheap. It’s a minor inconvenience for the price point. How often do you change your wifi name and password?

In your situation where you have BOTH the old WiFi and the new WiFi operational at the same time (not the more common situation), it could be easier. However in the far more common situation where someone changes the WiFi and now there is no way to communicate with the existing IoT devices (including the cameras) because the WiFi they are attempting to communicate with no longer exists.

Need ability to See & update WIFI settings on a live camera

  1. PLEASE add the ability to see what SSID the camera is currently connected to

  2. PLEASE add the ability change What SSID the camera is currently connected to without removing and reading the camera (which means climbing a ladder to reset all my floodlight cameras)

It’s already there: Settings->Device Info->Network

Go through the thread and you’ll see there’s no simple solution. There’s a way to do this but it’s complicated and Wyze doesn’t seem to want to do it.

5 years, 5 months later this is never happening

Agreed.

Mine are making duplicate cameras, not updating existing ones

It’s ridiculous. Because if you mounted them somewhere high then you have to climb all the way up and do it again. All because you changed your password. This needs fixing.
