This has to be a new mom. The first egg was laid outside the bowl. Now a chick hatches and she is supposed to remove the shell.
Chances are good that this inexperienced momma hatched from this house.

All 4 hatched. Momma kept the empty shells on the top of the nest bowl then removed them later. First time I have seen that.
Maybe she was hoping they would refill on their own. ![]()
I hope she knows how to feed the gang.
Good. Iâm waiting for my wrens to hatch.
I need to clean the feeder. It hinges at the top and there is a space where the rain gets in and makes everything soggy.
I put some live mealworms in a shallow bowl. She keeps sticking her head in but doesnât go in.
Really donât want to take it down to clean it but there is a v3 attached that will get soaked. Donât want to stress out momma..
Mom
can order out while you clean and put a umbrella on top of her regular food joint.
Maybe she doesnât recognize the white bowl. I put a bowl like that at the feeding table several times and they wouldnât eat from it.
Found out why momma isnât getting the mealworms. I had to scrape and wire brush the bottom of the feeder. It was caked with gunk. Smelled bad too. Got it all cleaned up and hosed off. Waiting for it to dry and will reassemble it tomorrow morning.
Most of the mealworms arrived dead due to the heat. Common in this weather. Amazon seller is sending more.
Got some hungry mouths to feed
Tell them to packem on ice.
I am not buying any more mealworms from Bassettâs Cricket Ranch on Amazon. Has not responded to two messages. I spread them out on a paper plate and only about 1/10th moved after 30 minutes.
PetSmart has them in refrigerators and the price is only a little higher than BCR.
I removed the dried mealworms and put only live mealworms in. Note the time.
Here is momma TWO MINUTES AND 33 SECONDS later grabbing as many as she can hold. I saw her perching on the telephone wire watching me.
And here is momma playing Grub Hub.
See what I did there? ![]()
Note the cleaned feeder, too! ![]()
She had a beak full. Maybe you should get her a shopping basket.
Wow, it looked like she gave it all to just the one chick.
The 1st of 4 wrens eggs finally hatched this morning.
If you listen to how hard she is pecking with her beak, that would explain why the bottom is all pecked out.
Great on the wrens. It shows Mother Nature likes you.
Mom looked up and down and no mealworms.
Tomorrow morning for breakfast.
