Bluebirds 2024

Just tell him he needs a permit for Bird House Modifications.

Shhhh. I never got a permit to put the birdhouse up.

Those are house sparrows. The one with the rusty brown markings and gray cap is male, the lighter bird is a female. They are invasive and destroy bluebird nests.

Thanks for the ID.

I will monitor the house for sparrow nesting material. Last year a starling built a nest and it was like I grabbed a handful of leaves and shoved them in the box. Messy. The bluebirds make a nice neat nest.

Had a starling start a nest.

I had a lot of bluebirds stick their head in the entrance but none have gone inside yet. This birdhouse is essentially the same as the previous birdhouse except for an addition to hold the camera.

I removed the nesting material and put it in the trash. One time I cleaned a sparrows nest and just threw it on the ground below the birdhouse. Dang sparrow just took it back in the house.

Need to figure out how to evict those pesky House Sparrows.

Last year I blasted the siren when a sparrow was in the house. Imagine a v3 siren in a small box. It had to be deafening. The bird must have been deaf because it didn’t even flinch when I turned the siren on.

I think @AnnWithAPlan and I need to work on a remote water nozzle to handle her cat issue and my bird issue.

Yeah, I have thought of that so many times. I do have one of those you hook to the water hose, but I can’t just leave that on or it’ll wear out the well pump. I did use a squirt gun :gun: a few times. Hmm, I wonder if there is such a thing as a remote one already.

Turkey blaster with a long hose. Muahahaha

Haha yeah. My squirt gun is battery operated.

First bluebird to visit the new birdbath.

Just love the mid-flight splayed-wing shots…

Neato keeno! I can't wait till they come back here, too.

Starlings have been building a nest in the bluebird house. In order to clean it out, I have to remove 4 screws then the front comes off. After a few times, this got tedious.
My bright idea was to use 2 brass hinges so clean outs and inspections would be easier.

I sent these photos to the Etsy seller in the UK.

Good idea!

The birds also need a doorknob. Bronze or Brass would be nice. :bird:

A doorbell would be nice, too.

I have had NO bluebirds check out the new birdhouse. They fly to the entrance, stick their head in, then fly away. This birdhouse is essentially the same as the older houses other than an extension. Sparrows are starting nests that I clean out as soon as I see it.
The only thing I can think of keeping the bluebirds out is the shiny metal flat washer directly across from the entrance that may be causing a reflection that spooks the bluebirds.

I used a rattle can of black Rustoleum so hopefully …

If that doesn’t do it I will drill another hole and move the mounting screw lower
