Allow Users to Assign Unique Names to Lamp Socket v2 and Accessory Bulb

These devices currently lack this feature, but it has the potential to be useful for each product for different reasons:

  1. Lamp Socket v2 should have Actions exposed for user-created Automations, and doing so in a way that’s truly useful would require the ability for users to assign a name to each device.
  2. As a device with its own independent Wi-Fi connection, Lamp Socket v2 simply should have the same type of device naming ability as other Wyze Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Even non-Wi-Fi devices, like Headphones, allow this!
  3. Although I can visually identify a specific Lamp Socket v2 device by tapping its Test button within the app and watching for the socket’s attached light bulb to turn on, being able to assign a unique name to each device would add greater context and improve usability and troubleshooting.
  4. Similarly, I can make an Accessory Bulb blink with its Show button in the app, but each bulb currently displays to the user with only a MAC address fragment or “bulb:#” for the “name”. This is not user friendly (especially not when troubleshooting connectivity issues), and being able to assign a unique name (like a location) for each Accessory Bulb would be a hugely helpful improvement.

I thought of another way Lamp Socket v2 would significantly benefit from this feature: As an independent Wi-Fi device[1], this would have the potential to be controlled by third-party platforms, like Google Home, Amazon Alexa, possibly Home Assistant and others. That could make it possible for a Google Home user to set the socket’s “Device type” as something like “Light”, “Outlet”, or “Switch” (looking at existing possibilities for a smart plug here) and essentially control it within that environment in the same way as a plug/switch.

That’s going a bit beyond the unique name request, but if a device like Lamp Socket v2 can show up with its own name in the Wyze app for Automations, then it doesn’t seem like much of a leap to give this device the same third-party integration support as Wyze Plug in other ecosystems.

  1. Yes, it’s required to be added in the app as a Cam accessory, but once it’s connected it uses its own Wi-Fi connection and not a cable or Bluetooth for communication. ↩︎
