Add ability to automatically reset or reboot at specific time

More like divide by 10 with powerline (and hope you get that)

If you have Coax in your house which many do, MOCA is a great option if you can’t pull some ethernet.

Yea, MOCA is the reason I haven’t done powerline. Its still a bit pricey. Our coax isn’t doing much these days. It’s only feeding the router/modem.

The nice thing about MOCA is you can get cheap used (or even new) ISP branded ones off ebay, usually they’re Actiontec but there’s a couple others out there. 100M ones (80M usable) are enough for some people, but the 1 and 2.5 gig ones can be found cheap too.

But even new regular brand name ones from amazon are reasonable (1 gig MOCA 2.0 set for about $90). It does add some latency over hardwired but should be comparable to a wifi backhaul and much more reliable than powerline.

My first reaction was like…“Huh‽” Then I thought, “If these things are running some Linux variant internally, then shouldn’t it be possible for the app to essentially provide a GUI to something like cron and schedule reboots and other things in the device?”

Seems like it should be technically possible. :man_shrugging:

That’s what I was thinking, but I haven’t really looked into it. Powerline is inexpensive, easy, and suits my needs so far to get connections where I want them without pulling cable.

It is definitely possible, potentially a memory limitation, or just the way they coded it. Pretty much every IOT device runs a linux flavor but often extremely stripped down (consequently what makes them vulnerable to attack).

I guess I haven’t specifically tested it, but I know one of my cams that is on the fringe of wifi occasionally misses running the “turn light on” (or the opposite) one I have configured, while the others with better signal never have had a problem. I’m guessing when they reboot after 30 mins of no connection, even if it was stored in memory, it would be lost.

My apologies, dropped to much acid in my youth

The ones I have don’t have that feature  You must have some newer models :man_shrugging:

They’re 2 years old at this point  Model KP115. Were a steal for $3.50, looks like they’re around $10 each right now or less in multipacks. Not sure what that translates to in CAD though.

I had a ton of the amazon smart plugs when Lowe’s had a doorbuster deal for like 50 cents and I found a hack that let you change it from the limit of 1 to like 20 at checkout, did that on a few orders. Was a nice profit.

My kill-a-watt did good service for about 2 decades.

I started picking up kp115’s about 2-4 years ago replacing the kp105’s. Since then the kill a watt has been resting peacefully in the toolbox.

The energy monitoring feature has paid for itself monthly. The entertainment center ac plugs are inaccessible. With energy monitoring I’m able to plug it in once then monitor the wattage. I discovered the entertainment center was drawing 50 watts with every device in standby. That’s over a killawatt a day. Being in California we are privileged to have the highest electric cost in the lower 48. 50 cents a killawatt. The solution for the standby wattage was to setup a schedule to turn off the entertainment center from 10pm to 4am. This results in a few dollars a month in savings. Pays for leaving the plug in 24/7.

I realize this is a bit off topic but I’m a believer in plugging wyze cams into a different companies plugs especially the first few months after a new product. Being a beta tester it’s almost a requirement. Once stable I remove the plugs and let Wyze stand on it’s own.

Case in point. Last December I installed plugs on all my PS v3’s. For months there was an issue with the PS v3’s locking up after a power outage or loss of internet. I must have toggled those plugs a hundred times. Then Wyze fixed the issue about 2 months ago. Been rock solid since then. Two weeks ago I took out the plugs, Wyze is on its own and doing fine.

I used Wyze Plugs because that’s what I had available at the time, but I know what you mean about the Cam Pan v3 experience. Powering those through a smart plug was almost a necessity until they patched it up with some firmware fixes.

I somehow ended up with both a Kill-A-Watt and then the upgraded Kill-A-Watt “EZ”. They come in very handy from time to time, but there isn’t anything I need to monitor constantly anymore (back when I ran servers they gave me a good idea of how much they were costing me each month as I could plug in my electric rate and it would keep track). They still get pulled out every now and then but mostly in the drawer.

I also have a couple of the surge protectors and power conditioners with the master/slave outlets but at this point I don’t have anything that stays on (that doesn’t need to) or that has a high standby draw. I’m good about shutting stuff off when not in use, and the few watts of standby draw from most remaining electronics is unavoidable, I don’t want my Fire Stick to take 2 minutes to boot up every time I turn my TV on etc.

I keep the TP Link plugs around as a “just in case” but since they’re still new in the box after 2 years, seems unlikely I’ll find a use for them, but never know. I did try to convince my mom to let me hook up one of her lamps so she could tell alexa to turn it on and off, but she is resistant to new tech.

I figure for what I paid for them, can’t hurt to have them hanging around.

My electric is up to about 25 cents now (just went up due to the state allowing a raise, to account for grid upgrades required to meet the state’s mandated green initiatives, gotta love that circle of life). I have a small server that runs 24x7 off an old laptop, it was drawing about 42 watts and just rescued a newer laptop from e-waste and am down to 14 now. It adds up to around 5 bucks a month savings, every bit counts. Of course that is counteracted this month by the 900 incandescent xmas lights on my big Holly bush out front, pulling around 400 wats for 6 hours a day. But worth the money, how else will Santa find me?

Great find. I need to check mine. I used Kill-A-Watt device to see what size UPS I needed for my entertainment center. I should check for daily or nightly wastes.

I did use a smart power strip on the UPS for the TV as master to turn off Roku and 5.1 surround sound system. DVD player was disconnected a few years ago.

Mine are HS103 and the USD$10 equals to CAD$14.38 and the USD$3.50 is CAD$5.03  Definitely that is cheap.

Where were you some 40 years ago

My second job that had drug screening.

All my life I have been protected by hard parents and private schools, US Navy screenings, corporate screenings. Now, retired, I can grow my hair long and do drugs. Now, no interest in either. Life goes on. Live and learn whatever route you choose. :slightly_smiling_face:

I haven’t done any drugs for over 40 years now. I’ll have a scotch here ad there as well as beer and wine as well I do smoke. Those are my only vices. I had a long hair all my youth up to when I turned 24, that’s when I cut it short. Made my father very happy.

We all make choices. I hope I did not infer any bad connotations.

When getting cleared for a top secret clearance with the Navy, the interviewer remarked that I led a boring life. I just said, “Yes sir.” I thought maybe boring for him, but I learned when to stay silent.

I did learn how to “drink” in the US Navy, embellish my language with less than colorful phrases and stand up for myself. I never could get into smoking anything. Never drank normal coffee, but I do like Cuban coffee (or Espresso). I was part of the Pepsi generation of cold caffeine.

I am definitely not a perfect person. We have all fallen short. I just figured I would respond about what I was doing 40 or more years ago. First it was due to fear of my parents and then fear of losing my job.

Life goes on. I can still make bad decisions with less fear now. :slightly_smiling_face:

None at all. Whatever I did was in moderation, it didn’t affect my life negatively in any way.

Good. Experimentation is part of life. I tried liver once and didn’t like it.
