Well yeah, that’s exactly my point. There’s some other baggage that the other choices bring.
I actually do have Ring, and I am worried about my data, however, they are only on the outside, and I heard they stopped sending data to Law Enforcement. But, it makes you feel like your data isn’t yours, which I guess I should have know anyway with any company
EDIT: you know, I need to get a degree in law so I can understand their ToS
I have indeed voted with my wallet and Ring lost. But I won’t be paying for the subscription service from Wyze either, especially for multiple cameras. Again, I was simply pointing out that their current price structure is not in my opinion “reasonable” when you have several cameras as many users do.
But back to the topic at hand, how does this breach really effect users?
All the more reason to support MFA / 2FA via an app instead of SMS.
I love that approach, and recommended it to someone else above. Don’t put all eggs into one basket. Diversify for enhanced security.
Yeah, I have friends/co-workers with Ring unlimited, but it’s only worth it if you already have $500+ up front in Ring camera costs, so the total cost of ownership over 3 years still comes out on Wyze’s side. Also, not every camera needs complete motion capture.
I’m not saying Wyze is the cheapest for everyone, just pointing out that there’s no intent to nickel and dime customers, just reasonably priced hardware with reasonably priced optional add-ons. It’s the reason I bought my first WyzeCam and the reason I have 8 now
I never meant to imply they were, so if that is what came across my apologies.
OK, don’t, nobody is forcing you to, you still have full SD card recording equivalent to CMC but without the notification. Why complain?
While waiting for more info, I wanted to pose a couple of questions:
-
When will app based MFA/2FA be delivered? Perhaps this incident (if it is indeed true) may help speed this along. Seems to me that most (all?) app that has any type of sensitive info needs this this extra layer of security.
-
Scenario - User A enables the existing SMS based 2FA option - but has account shared with spouse/significant other/etc. (User B). Besides the obvious option of User B forwarding the SMS code to user A when they want access, is there another? I was wondering if sharing access feature would work, but was unsure if sharing access gave users full admin level permissions/capability. I believe having app based MFA would solve this problem…
How long is this thread going to be going on. At some point I think Wyze needs to step in and just say we are shutting this particular thread down. They’ve done what they can do and we are doing what we can do. All that’s happening is complaining complaining complaining.
When will app based MFA/2FA be delivered?
When enough people vote for it: Add authenticator app(s) for 2 Factor Authentication (2FA)
No, that didn’t come across in your post, I was originally responding to @mailmeoffers comment about the subscription upsell after selling hardware cheap, which was also not intended in a negative way
I just hear the “unlimited” options quoted a lot without context of how many cameras are actually in use and how much of that unlimited storage is wrapped up in the purchase price the camera.
I’m having a premonition: more events like this in our future. Another one: the average person even more stupefied by how all of this stuff “works.” A third: passionate problem-solving nerds in skyrocketing demand to help automate all these “wonders of automation.”
I’m tired now. I sleep.
Just to be clear - I think the current pricing structure is completely reasonable; no issue on my end.
Further, I also believe Wyze is undervaluing the product; the margins have got to be thin, and with all the constant updates and new features, I would gladly pay twice as much per unit.
Just my 2 cents…
EDIT: Again, in the name of clarity, I’m not faulting Wyze for the subscription model; it’s where the ball has moved to in IoT businesses. I was simply trying to explain that to those out there who are wondering why they can’t find a smart-whatever that has every bell and whistle, for a one-time purchase, it is not a sustainable business model in 2019 and beyond.
It seems like I am changing about one password a week due to security issues. All the more reasons for password manages and never using the same password twice.
When this shut down occurred all of my wyze bulbs, plugs and sensors were working properly with Alexa
As expected. They do not require a hub, and independently connect to your wifi. Nothing magical about this.
EDIT: Actually, that is interesting, as Alexa would connectivity would have required an API token. I presume these other devices are firewalled from/do not rely on the same backend services as the cameras, and perhaps their tokens were not revoked???
I want to note that my Google Assistant token was revoked. I don’t hook my Wyze up to my Alexa devices, so, I can’t say much for Alexa’s Services.
It is very annoying though to have to remap everything when the connection gets severed.
True enough, NVR recording would be great!
Alexa continued to work even when the app would not, but Alexa did require the Wyze skill to be re enabled. No 2FA on the skill so no issue. So I was able to turn lights and plugs on and off and view cameras via the Echo Shows and my FireTV. Really the only thing I could not get to was the Wyze app and Event videos in the app. Until the 2FA servers calmed down anyway.
