Set a Wyze V3 reminder for the Quadrantids Meteor Showers 12/28/20 to 1/12/21. Peak is Jan. 2 overnight to Jan 3rd!

Big dipper should rotate around polaris (north star, circled) counter clockwise as your looking north.

Based on your tips, I checked this am … and found that Ursa Major rotated to be above my location early this morning.

Last evening, the Big Dipper first started low towards the Northeast horizon (and will be blocked from my V3 location behind my house).

So I was glad to see that later in the evening, my V3 camera will capture some of the “show” (hopefully)(weather permitting).

I’m looking forward to capturing a few Quadrantids! The timeframe starts tonight.

Caught another meteor, with moon… CST

wow…thats impressive! there is one of the fireballs I was talking about…notice how consistent it was, small ones flickers as they fall into dark flight…had the moon not been out and night vision off you would’ve picked up the color of that one WONDERFULLY!

I’m in CST also, but have been socked in with clouds and snow. I’m hoping that things clear up here for the “peak” of the Quadrantids.

But, to be honest with you, I enjoy seeing what others capture also! So good luck!

On CBS last night:

“An alternative name for the Quadrantids is the Bootids since the meteors appear to radiate from the modern constellation of Bootes,” NASA says. “Even though the constellation may no longer be recognized, it was considered a constellation long enough to give the meteor shower its name.”

The Quadrantids mark the final meteor shower of the season, ahead of several months with little celestial activity. According to the American Meteor Society, it has the potential to be the strongest shower of the year, along with the Perseids and the Geminids.

During the brief window from Saturday night into Sunday morning, there is a chance to spot between 60 to 200 meteors per hour traveling at 25.5 miles per second. Quadrantids are known for bright fireball meteors, which are larger explosions of light and color that last longer than the typical meteor streak.

Despite the shower’s potential, it will be brief: the window of maximum activity is just six hours.

“The reason the peak is so short is due to the shower’s thin stream of particles and the fact that the Earth crosses the stream at a perpendicular angle,” NASA says.

@Bam and @Omgitstony , I believe I remember from your astronomy class that the correct pronunciation of the Bootes constellation is “Booty,” correct? Or was it “Boot is?” (A little freshman astronomy humor)

And dog gone it, my forecast for the weekend is heavy clouds, snow, ice and rain! Think I’m going to be sitting this one out.

But I’m expecting that lots of V3 owners are going to be posting some spectacular meteor captures this weekend!

Get those V3s pointed up for the peak of the meteor shower tonight

I’m looking at clouds and snow tonight so I’ll be looking for your videos tomorrow!

At work still so I can’t check footage more, but got a motion alert for what I thought was vent smoke, I checked the alert and caught a little zipper! (Yea I know not ideal through window with drapes visible view but didn’t have a choice this round.)

Nice catch in center of screen. Through a window no less! Wonder if vent smoke triggered an alert and just happen to catch the meteor.

The gopro I also had up missed it. It was between exposures. :frowning: Dang it!

I’ve been completely blocked with solid clouds during the entire Quadrantids event, but hope your luck has been better.

It’s going to be a long dry spell until the next Meteor Shower event … the Lyrids. Active April 16th to the 25th. Peaking the night of April 22-23

Finally, after weeks of heavy clouds, snow and ice blocked my attempts at capturing a Quadrantids meteor, this morning (1/12), the heavens opened up, the skies cleared (for the most part), and I was able to capture a meteor,

Here’s the clip. The meteor doesn’t have much of a tail, but appears at 5:01:40 am CST in the right, center of the screen. It’s quick, so don’t blink!

The Quadrantids end tonight, but who knows if there will be any stragglers, so keep those V3s pointed to the dark skies. Last night, I also captured several other meteors, so they are still out there!

Once the Quadrantids are over, we’re going to have to wait until April for the next meteor shower, the Lyrids, April 16th to 30th. @WyzeDongsheng @Bam

I didn’t know if its a video artifact or a victim of compression, but I love seeing the persistent trails.

Me too! Never grow tire of looking at what everyone catches in the dark night sky with their Wyze V3s. Having a nice long tail left by the meteor is a bonus!

Unfortunately, I think we’re going to have to wait until the Lyrids appear in April.

But who knows what might go bump in the night between now and then.
