Clean them. Recycle that way. Use an air compressor and blow them out from the inside and/or vacuum outside. Go outside to do this!

Kind of difficult to recycle a HEPA filter that is holding bacteria and viruses. As suggested you can vacuum them a couple times but depending on how dirty the air it might not be a good idea.

Most of the organisms quickly desicate. Vacuuming would just move the ‘dust’ from one filter to another assuming you have a HEPA vacuum. It might be better to put your vacuum in the ‘blow’ mode and take it outside. Then blow the particles from inside out. I’d use an N95 mask while doing this just to prevent irritation. Depends on the environment that it’s been operating. If there’s asbestos collected you don’t ever want to breathe that. Don’t blow from the outside in because it will just embed the particulates deeper into the fabric.

If you want to recycle, just pop the filter in a plastic bag, tie it shut, and throw it. Don’t clean it–not necessary.
