With the v4 cam night vision mode set to [Auto] and night vision IR lights set to [Off].
I only need the IR lights to come on when motion is detected. Because wyze does not have this feature, I have an Arlo cam set up to light up my backyard with its IR when it detects motion. The issue I am having is the wyze will see fine for about 2 seconds in night vision mode as the yard is illuminated by the Arlo cam. But then switches to day mode for a second or two, then switches back. Everything is blurry during this time as image adjustments are made during the transitions. The IR lights are not pointed directly at the v4 cam, only illuminating the field.
Yes unfortunately it is not an uncommon issue for various cameras with auto night switches. I had a neighbor with cameras next to another neighbor with a motion sensor light and they were battling all night until I told them what was going on. The same happens with IR of certain wavelengths.
The “turn on IR lights when motion is detected” has been on the wishlist for some time and something I’d really like. But no progress has been made that I’ve seen. Others have asked to be able to schedule night mode instead of relying on ambient light, which is in the same wishlist topic and has made the same 0 progress.
Unfortunately it would appear the Arlo has enough light outside of the Wyze’s IR filter range to make it think it is light out again. The only way to fix it is going to be to maybe turn down the brightness of the Arlo lights (if it allows that) or point it differently. Maybe try the wyze lights and disable the Arlo ones?
There are threads where people use external IR illuminators and disable the cam ones, they are brighter and do not attract bugs, plus they don’t reflect off raindrops and dust and trigger the cam. You just set it up 5 to 10 feet from the cam. In those threads people have reported which wavelengths work in conjunction with the wyze auto night vision and don’t cause it to flip back and forth. May be an option if you want to go that route.
If the Wyze Cam v4 is responding to the change of the Arlo’s IR illumination (i.e., the IR turning on) because you have the Arlo triggering on motion, would it be possible to just have the Arlo’s IR on all the time at night in order to avoid the change that the Wyze Cam v4 is seeing? That might be another option to consider, depending on which Arlo camera you’re using.
Didn’t occur to me that the Arlo might have that feature, agreed that if so, just leaving them on may make more sense.
I’m also wondering if @ai.ya were to turn on the Wyze IR lights if maybe that would actually help matters. More illumination and maybe enough to make the cam realize it is actually night (since it will be seeing ore of its own IR than the Arlo’s).
Those are all good ideas, I’ll have to look into the external LEDs one.
Only issues leaving the Arlo IR on all the time isnt feasible as its a battery powered model; and setting IR on the whole night is what I wanted to avoid.
By using the Arlo, I was hoping the wyze would operate as if its own IR lights stayed off and only turned on during motion detection.
My only real hands-on Arlo experience is with a wired doorbell, but I’m aware that many of their cameras are battery powered.
Why is this the goal? I’m not saying it’s wrong. I’m just trying to understand the reasoning and have a better idea of why you wouldn’t just want Cam v4 to use its own IR lights automatically at night. Does that trigger the Arlo and drain its battery or something?
Its just a matter of personal preference. For one, Im not a big fan of the constant red glow from the IR leds, that’s for sure.
It was unfortunate to find the wyze was only [on] or [off] with night vision on, and it doesn’t appear like that will ever change .
*Although I don’t have enough flying insects, orbs, web, bugs etc. at the time to be a major problem. It seems to be for others on this forum. Having the IR lights turning on momentarily when motion is detected would alleviate some of those issues if not completely.
I wonder if Battery Cam Pro is capable of doing something like that. It’s supposed to use PIR and radar to detect motion, but I don’t really know whether or not it can be set to activate the IR illumination when motion is detected.
That doesn’t really help with your current situation and what you have on hand. I’m just speculating, because I don’t think what you want to do is possible with Cam v4.
It isn’t, but it is one of the items on the wishlist for new automation actions, unfortunately while it seemed they were going to implement new ones last year it died off.
