Hi,
I have an Asus TUF3200v2 router and wyze v4 with custom DNS settings. Does this affect the camera? Does it interfere with the operation? For example, will it make it less secure?
Are these settings good?

Your DNS settings are fine and well recognized.
Thanks for the quick reply. I have since set up a CIRA Canadian DNS server. Is that also ok?

You’re most welcome.
Unfortunately, I don’t recognize that DNS service. I am sure a Canadian member can assist. @habib might be able to answer your question.
So DNS over tls and other settings router OK? I guess it doesn’t matter if it’s set to Google or CA CIRA.
Non-profit company, here is the website:
https://www.cira.ca/en/canadian-shield/
The cira is better in that it does not store any personal data compared to google.
That is a nice plus. I really don’t have an opinion. I guess if you trust the company and Canada, I can’t see any harm.
It’s odd that they advertise slower speeds than the others. Is that a sign of honesty?
I would be curious to see what @habib thinks when he wakes up.
Thank you dear my friend for your answers. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
It was a pleasure to meet you.
Merry Christmas and have a happy and prosperous New Year in 2025 and beyond.
Yes, I totally trust the company.
@Lenovomen, Hungarian, eh?
I would expect the use of DNS over TLS to be more private (if not more secure) and not affect the camera’s performance. Doesn’t your router just pass out DHCP leases to your devices, and then the devices pass any DNS queries to the router, where the router sends the actual query out to the Internet and then passes the result back to the device? Since there’s no way that I’m aware of to set DNS servers for individual Wyze cameras in the app, then I would expect the cameras (or any other devices) to essentially just use the router as a DNS relay.
Incidentally, I like Quad9 and have used that for several years with only a few hiccups.
Honestly secure DNS, DOT, etc are somewhat pointless. Your ISP can still track who you’re connecting to and sell that aggregated information. The extra overhead essentially just slows you down.
Personally I just run one of the DNS testing utilities and use the fastest ones, which in my case (and most cases) is the ISP DNS. Of course if your ISP DNS is not reliable then you can pick another service, but mine has proven to be very reliable.
If you truly want to be invisible to your ISP you need to use VPN, but the VPN provider, the browser/OS you’re using, the remote sites, all still can gather information from you.
As long as the DNS provider doesn’t block responses from Wyze as being malicious (which in some cases can happen as some of the cams use smaller, lesser known hosting providers) then it doesn’t care what servers or protocols you’re using on the WAN side.
If your goal is to use filtering abilities to block malicious, adult, advertising, etc then you can use one of the services out there that offers that but DOT, DNSSEC, etc is not necessary. But again make sure those filtering services don’t interfere with Wyze’s communication.
Unfortunately I am not familiar with CIRA. Personally I use Cloudfare and have been using it since its inception. No issues so far.
Back when I had the DSL device at the cottage I was using ISPs DNS but one day I started getting redirected to all these porn and online gaming sites. Not sure what was going on but after changing the DNS to Cloudflare the redirects stopped.
Uh huh, must have been the ISP DNS.
That’s what I figured out. Am I glad I don’t have them as ISP anymore, overpriced and terrible service.
