Arbitrary, as far as I know. They may have a concern that you will use too much space on the SD card (they used to recommend only 32 GB cards and below), and then get angry when normal event recording doesn’t go as far back in time as you thought it did. But I have no evidence of that. The limit is simply 30 days ATM.

Allow for Time Lapse of Longer Duration

I would like the ability to define a time lapse as long as a year. Might require limiting the interval and pre-allocation of anticipated required space. For a year long, one picture or frame per day it would be fairly small. For intervals of even once an hour it would result in a much bigger file. Possibly break the Intermediate-range files into monthly segments?
