wow, was fighting this for an hour, clearing cache, rebooting phone, etc, to no avail, within a minute of submitting the above reply, the app is now working.
Contact and motion sensor still have no events. And all settings for contact sensors are blank. Motion sensors not much better as sensor video setting is blank.
